Egypt crisis: President Hosni Mubarak resigns as leader

Hosni Mubarak has decided to step down as president of Egypt.

Vice-President Omar Suleiman made the announcement in a brief statement on state TV.

It came as thousands massed in Cairo and other Egyptian cities for an 18th day of protest to demand Mr Mubarak's resignation.

Protesters responded by cheering, waving flags, embracing and sounding car horns. "The people have brought down the regime," they chanted.

Mr Suleiman said Mr Mubarak had handed power to the high command of the armed forces.

"In the name of God the merciful, the compassionate, citizens, during these very difficult circumstances Egypt is going through, President Hosni Mubarak has decided to step down from the office of president of the republic and has charged the high council of the armed forces to administer the affairs of the country," he said.

"May God help everybody."

marvelous. from fascist fake democracy to a full-blown fascist military dictatorship.

what happens when the american people finally wise up and insist that we cut off aid so that we can spend the money that goes to propping up these regimes can be spent on our own crumbling infrastructure?

after wwii, instead of ripping out our old machinery and using that to rebuild germany and japan, we bought them all new, leaving us two generations behind in tooling, leading to the collapse of medium-sized industry in america in favor of the better technology and cheaper labor offshore.

yessir, the events that have played out in front of me since november 22, 1963 have sure made me proud to be an american. our armed forces have valiantly invaded country after country to ensure that that country's natural resources, particularly the oil and dope, get into america unimpeded and at a price that the free enterprise mavens can profit from. they've successfully eradicated at least 20 million useless eaters in my lifetime alone. i saw one estimate that tracked from the spanish-american war and claimed 200 million little bits of that collateral damage the bushwhackers regret so much.

I think he was really stepping down last night, though he didn't want to give that impression in case there was a riot at the TV station

you seem a bit disrespectful of the american armed forces...dont forget that those young people layed their lives on the line and often lost it in your name...they did it for you in their hearts

Wow, I'm actually surprised he resigned. It seemed that he was adamant and would be able to hold on to power for a few more months. I was guessing that his plan was to stay in power a bit longer, and then once the dust settled, strengthen his grip again. That was a surprise.

Don't get too optimistic though. People were cheering in the streets when Castro and Lenin came to power. Just because one man leaves, doesn't mean everything starts anew. The military will probably continue to control things.

Curious as to why you chose Kennedy's death as a benchmark date in this comment?

This has nothing to do with America for once --well, it had a lot to do, but the US just sat in the corner and rooted and cheered for the winner.

mal, i'm afraid you're being deceived by what it looks like on the television.

he left the army in power. the us provides billions in aid to them. connect the dots. this is not good for the egyptian people. in tunisia, they're burning synagogues. none of this is what they are presenting on television and on the wire services.

because in my estimation and that of longtime collaborators, the government of the united states was suborned that day. my next benchmark date is 1974 and the bloodless coup on nixon.

we were promised great things with the technology by ike and jfk. i trained my entire growing up for a career as an aquanaut/astronaut only to have those programs scrapped in favor of dirty bush wars. when i changed gears and tried to work in the civilian sector , they dried those funds up too.

today, they just announced huge federal budgets cuts. not one dime was taken away from defense.

The space program was scrapped? Hmmm. I know quite a few folks working at NASA and their contractors that will be shocked to hear that.

when was the last time you saw a sealab experiment or are you too young to even have heard of it?

also, if the space program had been funded properly as promised by eisenhower and kennedy, we would have thousands of people in orbit and on the moon by now and tens of thousands living under the ocean.

what do we have? a barely survivable little hodgepodge of space trash that can hardly keep a handful aboard, nothing in the way of a shuttle or launch vehicle and deep water wells built so far down with no containment dome that can take a human into it and keep them alive that when they blow out it takes 2 months for robots to cap them.

Why exactly do we need thousands of people in space or on the moon?

The space program has vaulted technology forward by leaps and bounds, and is directly responsible for a myriad of positive things that have a positive impact on our day to day lives. I'm pretty satisfied with how it has happened.

Especially every time I drink a glass of Tang. :)

eisenhower and kennedy thought it was a better application of the technology than going and blowing up little brown people for their dope and oil. there was great concern at that time about overcrowding and they wanted to open up new environments for habitation to take some of the pressure off the planet. now they don't care so much because they've got the public inured to the facts of our military and how many civilians they've killed in the past 47 years. some conspiracy theorists contend that the bushwhackers intend to exterminate as much as 98% of the human population and replace us with robots.

your wisecrack about the tang just indicates that you know very little about what NASA has and has not accomplished. i'm surprised you didn't make a remark about your teflon ass as well.

You clearly know nothing about me, what I know, or what is my sense of humor.

You also clearly don't know as much as you think you do.

i know enough to know that you haven't said anything about yourself or what you think i think i know but really don't. wanna be a little more specific? i don't recall getting personal with you at all. why are you pushing that envelope with me?

my bad. i did get slightly personal in response to your wisecrack. why don't you enlighten me rather than trying to fight with me. this thread may still be salvageable. the original premise you've pulled so far afield was that it was not a good thing for mubarak to leave the army in charge with the american military aid pipeline still wide open.

Perhaps you should recall better.

When you change the focus of discussion from talking about the topic to talking about the person you are conversing with, that is the very definition of "getting personal." It's something I've seen as a common occurance with you. Perhaps that's why you consistantly have found yourself at odds with so many people here? Maybe you are right and this place isn't the right place for you.
