I agree and go with that definition myself Donnie. I definitely see them as heroes because they are putting their lives at risk to do that job. Not everyone chooses those occupations and so that makes them special and yes heroes in my eyes.

Further, anyone who puts themselves into a life threatening situation to save/help others is a hero!

ha they choose their occupations...land of the free, remember?

As for me, I don't find any police officers, firemen, military, doctors etc to be a hero. It's their job to be doing what they're doing...so stop the bitching :)

I have seen many threads throughout the years discussing what a hero is, either directly or indirectly.

So what is your definition of a hero?
Can you be a hero simply by choice of profession?
Is a doctor, fireman, police officer or soldier a hero because they hold that position or do they need to go above and beyond to be considered a hero?

The reason I ask, is because I see the term thrown around too much in my opinion. I think that the term has been watered down and it takes away from those who truly are hero's.
Anyone can be a hero, whether it's a school counselor who helped change the life of a teenage kid or a fireman who saved a kittens' life. I think that at one point in their lives, most people have been "heroes" in someway or another. You don't have to save a whole society to be called a hero, you can be a hero to an individual person.
