I quit a job back when I was 19

I was not gonna continue and give the asshat a chance to fire me.

I have fired one person and it was one of the toughest things I ever had to do. The kid had only been married a while and was a good worker. But time after time he showed up late and it caused friction with the other workers. I gave him plenty of warnings.

It was tough to do but once done I never looked back or regretted it.

I've only been fired once. It was my first horse farm job. I needed to get a year of experience working on a farm before I could apply for a program that would get me a visa so I could work in Kentucky. So I applied at a farm close to my home town that had Arab show horses. The owner didn't really like the fact I was only applying for temporary work and also didn't like the fact that I had almost no experience with horses. He hired me anyway. I had been working there for almost a week when two of his prized mares got out on me. It was my fault due to inexperience and not following instructions. The mares ran down the road and we had to go catch them but no one was hurt or anything. The manager told me that she had talked to the owner and they agreed to give me a second chance. When I came to work the next day I was told that they were letting me go because they had thought I had more experience than I did. (I still think that's bullshit because they knew my work history when they hired me.) I was fired on my birthday. :(

I've been fired from bullshit jobs when I was a teenager, but I don't really consider those real jobs because I wasn't supporting a family or honestly even doing anything productive with it.

Yes but it was due to coworker's jealousy and the boss was actually embarrassed and apologetic about it and gave me 2 mos. extra salary and a glowing recommendation. It was at an attorney's office and I was training for a closing secretary. Boss loved me but his daughter worked there and wanted a girlfriend to work in my position. The walls were so thin I could hear her and the boss talking, her crying, him shouting and him finally saying words to the effect I was a good employee and if so and so didn't work out she was not to say another word.

I also got another job before the two month was up so basically for two months I was getting two paychecks! :)

In not so direct ways yes. 1. College that didn't want me back the next fall semester. 2. A job that was bought out because the former owner retired and the new owners didn't know how to run a business and were losing so much money they couldn't keep me on.

I was laid off by two different companies when they were downsizing. The first company just cut out the customer service group at the location we worked in and the second I didn't have enough seniority over anyone else to stay. Both times were really difficult, but I did get glowing recommendations from my former bosses.

One job, at a gas station. The owner blamed me for the till coming up short. He should have seen his son dipping his fingers in there. He'd have known.

Got laid off at one job, grain company. It was me, or a fella with less seniority than me. The excuse was that the other guy was needed to help run the fertilizer plant. I could run it just as well as he. The problem was that I didn't drink beer with the boss every evening after work.

... One of the reasons that I am leery of working for a family owned business again ...

I hear ya, Merc. I have been laid off from several jobs, during my lifetime, as business declined and fewer employees were needed. Usually, the "suckups" kept their jobs, no matter how incompetent they were. Eventually though, they found themselves out on the street too.

I got fired from my first job as a teen back in 1996. The owner was someone who you could never do anything right and was very hard to work for, even though my co-workers and I were making just minimum wage.

Finally, I lost my cool with my boss.
