When I was a little boy I would ride the bus to school. There was a girl that would get on. She had blonde hair and blue eyes. I remember thinking she was pretty! She would always wear these nice little dresses with flowers, topped off with a ribbon in her hair. She also had to wear these plastic braces in the back of her shoes. To this day I don't know why, but I didn't care. She was pretty. Being young, I could not muster the nerve to talk to her and I tended to stay away because all of the other boys would make fun of her because of her handicap.

One day, I was on the bus and her stop came up. She had not rode the bus in a couple days so I stared intently at the doors until they opened. My heart skipped when I saw her ribbon. I did my best to look like I didnt care, but kept an eye on the floor so I could see when she was getting close to me. Thats when I noticed the boy behind her. He was kicking her in her braces. Every step she took was met with a kick. I looked up at her and she was so embarassed and almost in tears. I was so mad. Infuriated! I waited untill she passed and I hopped up between him and her and popped him a good one. Right in the nose. I then turned around and motioned for her to sit with me. And there she sat for the rest of the year. In my seat with me. We rode in silence for the remaining of the school year. Never talking. I was pretty shy back then.

I guess this is important to me because hopefully when she thinks back to her childhood, she wont have memories of everyone being so cruel. Maybe the memory of me sticking up for her can give her a smile.

I don't think I have done anything important in my life. However, I have helped a few people and seeing happiness in their eyes made me feel my true worth. I once negotiated with a porter to carry my weight for half of his asking price. maybe he needed money badly so he agreed. However, I paid him double the amount he asked. I still remember his eyes welling with tears.
