Pancakes are associated with the day preceding Lent because they were a way to use up rich foodstuffs such as eggs, milk, and sugar, before the fasting season of the 40 days of Lent. The liturgical fasting emphasized eating plainer food and refraining from food that would give pleasure: In many cultures, this means no meat, dairy, or eggs.

Does anyone here observe Lent? I don't formally observe it but most years I take the opportunity to deny myself something just for the heck of it. This year it's no fast food or Pepsi for me until Easter. :willy_nilly:

When I was a kid we used to try and give up something for Lent, not because I had a religious family, it was just the novelty of sacrifice
