I don't agree with the 'happiness scale' you are referring to because according to that perspective the more we have the more we need to be happy. It is like an addiction that can never be satisfied. Whereas the people that I am talking about are truly thankful for everything. I know that I could loose everything and still be happy. Most people can't say that.

The teenagers that went on the mission trip came home with quite the different attitude. They are worlds apart in how they think now compared to the average US teenager. God bless them.

That's not true at. The scale slides. You can be happy at different levels of the scale but it's obvious as you slide downwards the tougher it would be to remain happy, not impossible, just tougher.

It's not quite a fair comparison because when existing on the edge of survival their happiness scale would be very different than ours, possibly as bad as aren't I happy to be alive for today; found a piece of bread today, now I'm not starving as much as I was yesterday.

I totally disagree with your reasoning/perspective.

And your two posts seem to contradict each other. In the first one you make it sound like a morsel of bread would make a poor person happy. Yet in the second post of yours it says that the farther down the slide the tougher it would be to be happy.

How does your slide work? Basically where there is more money the slide goes up? And where there is less money the slide goes down? What is this slide you refer to and what makes it move?

I still contend that with your way of thinking the more we have the more we need to be happy. It is like an addiction that can never be satisfied.

Most people never learn how to be content and happy with what they have. For people that do know how to be content with what they have, this is not to say that they don't strive for more, but more is not to be their motivation ... if it is, then it is just them trying to satisfy that addiction to which they are not content with what they have. This is the way of the world; the way of most people - so this outlook is not surprising to me. (no offense)

I don't care how much of a "joyful spirit" you have, if you live in a area where ethnic cleansing is commonplace, more than half of the population has AIDS/HIV, scores of people die each day from easily treatable sicknesses and so on, you're going to be effected from where you live.

You're talking to a person who has actually spent time there you know. Perhaps she has a better perspective on in than you do. ... Just a thought.

Live in Africa. Then come back and say what you just said again.

Did you read what i said?

I said there is no peace on earth, thus there is no happy place here on earth, only moments.. In certain parts of africa, because not every part of that country is bad, you have seen how the goverment lives over there right? They driving BMW's and sh**. , its really disgusting too look at when you have milliions of people dying over there.

Anyways, i am positive there are lots of good positive moments over in africa, they just don't show it on tv.
