Nice :thumbup

Never heard of one. Should be fun to play. Not a cheap guitar that is for sure

Thanks. It's a Paul Reed Smith, close to a Gibson but not quite. I paid about double what I thought I would for my first "good" guitar, and will be making payments on it for a while. I just can't see myself paying $2500 for a Gibson Standard, at least not anytime soon. :)

I bought a used Gibson Les Paul sunburst in the early 80's

If I get interested a lot in playing again I would like to get a Stratocaster or Telecaster.

Do you use any electronics with your guitars? I have an equalizer that works like a charm but has a lot of hiss if you turn up the effects. Too bad because it really makes a light touch do a lot. And I have fumbly fingers

I'm a better acoustic player than electric. But both my acoustic guitars have fallen into disrepair. I'll no doubt one day splash out on something top notch in the acoustic range. I've always had my eye on Seagull's 12-strings.

I've found that Seagull guitars come stock with a bit lower action, which can make them easier to play without modification. For me personally though, I'm a Martin guy through and through. I have a DM 6-string and a 1972 D-28 12-string.

I don't play much anymore, but I have a Line 6 POD XT, a couple of Danelectro pedals (overdrive and echo), a Boss Digital Delay, a chorus, and a Dunlop Crybaby Wah pedal. It seems like I have 1-2 more, but they're in the garage and it's too cold to go out looking right now. :24:

Thought I would revive this thread.

Two years into playing guitar and I'm still in hard core learn mode. I'm past the "wondering if I will stick with it mode", apparently am committed. ;) I started out with a Fender Squier Affinity starter guitar and I am really now hungering for a better instrument. All of the $1000+ guitars I've played at the store sound great, much more so than my starter. If I can afford $1700 for a guitar, I really don't see a purpose for purchasing a $700 guitar as a stepping stone. Is there agreement on this?

I realize we have forum members from all over, so I don't want to sound like a snob, but I'm really leaning towards something made in the States. Not that I am buying based on investment potential, but my understanding is that U.S. made guitars as compared to Oriental made versions of brand names hold their value better. I realize there is also more to it than just where it it made. The higher priced guitars that just happen to be made in the States have better tonal qualities and better features (as far as I know). Any comments or disagreement on this?

Right now I am looking at four possible upgrades:

1) Fender American Stratocaster Deluxe. (approx $1500)

2) Gibson Les Paul Studio (approx $1300)

3) Gibson Les Paul Standard (approx $1900-2500)

4) PRS Mira (approx $1700)

Ok, so who prefers what? If it is not on the list feel free to mention. :)

I really don't see myself spending more than the Mira which btw I find very attractive, playable, and sounds great. I also like the Fender. And while I am attracted to the Gibson sound, I have a very hard time justifying over $2000 for the Gibson LPS. Regarding the Gibson LPS, looking for someone who has played the less expensive Oriental made Epiphones. I see Epiphones priced from $300-$900. How do they sound compared to their higher priced siblings? And how would you compare the LP Studio to the LP Standard? Granted I need to spend more time at the store playing them.

My personal opinion would be to get the PRS Mira. I've always been in love with PRS guitars... ever since I played my friends dad's Custom 24 when I was in high school. I'm also going to add that PRS guitars and Mesa/Boogie amps (particularly the rectifiers) sound like they're made for each other.

The oddball guitar in your lineup there is the Strat... you're going to have a vastly different sound with the Strat than you are with the other three. Though if you end up with a double humbucker Strat, then you'll have something similar, just with a different body... but HH strats are rather rare, and I don't even know if they make 'em anymore to be honest. It really depends on the sound that you're looking for and what you like to play. For my own personal tastes, you really can't beat the sound of a Les Paul or PRS... especially when you pair it with the right amp. That's not to say that I have anything against Strats, because I don't... my next guitar purchase (whenever that is) will end up being a Fender American Strat (or a Jagstang if I can find one)... because I love the sounds you can get with them as well. It's really just a matter of personal preference... all four guitars are great choices.

As far as Gibson vs. Epiphone goes... I own an Epiphone Les Paul Studio. But mine is a little bit different than most... while it was made overseas, the previous owner had it gutted and replaced with all of the internal components you'd find in the Gibson handmade in the USA variant. The truss, electronics, pickups, machines, bridge... really, everything is the same that you'd find in the Gibson. I wouldn't trade my guitar for anything... I've played some Gibson Les Paul guitars that cost 2-3x what I paid for mine ($800 used), and I prefer the sound I get from my Epi. The only Gibson that I've played that I loved more than my guitar was a Black Beauty LP triple humbucker... amazing guitar.

Edit: and for some reason I missed the fact that you bought the Mira already. :24: Great purchase, I think you'll be quite happy with the PRS... like I said, they're beautiful guitars, and sound amazing. Now go get a nice Mesa/Boogie amp for yourself... you won't regret it, I promise.

I have to listen to one of those. Thanks for the suggestion. :) Currently I have a Fender Super Champ XD, a modified tube amp with modeling. Last week I listened to a Fender Reverb and it was incredible and expensive at $1000. The larger speaker makes a huge difference in sound quality. I've also listened to the Peavey 75w Vipyr, a modeling amp which sounds good too.

I have Fender Reverb

Bought it used ages ago. Needs another speaker

Anybody know a good source to buy a speaker??

Currently use what I think is a Fender Jazz. It is small but has some effects in it that are nice. I suppose I could get some adds ons for the same effect. Not in the budget right now though.

I've got a Mesa/Boogie Studio .22+

Ignore the bass amp underneath it. :24: I need to get it repaired though, it got damaged in moving it out to Texas 5 years ago and I haven't gotten it fixed since.

Here's three of my five instruments as well

I also have another bass and the aforementioned 12-string.

oh, and excuse the quality of those pictures... they were taken about 8 years ago with a crappy camera.

I have been seriously considering buying a new guitar... But unfortunatley I don't think I can afford it, not if I want to continue living in such style.

I highly recommend Jensen or Eminence speakers

What's it like to play, and how much did it set you back?
