This is a two-parter.

Who would you say is objectively the greatest writer?

Who's your favourite author? Doesn't have to be the greatest author out there, just the author who's style you love the most.

IMO Shakespeare has to be the greatest writer. His writing is structurally flawless, insightful, witty, and entertaining. I can't think of any category in which he even falls to average.

As far as favourites go, I'm voting for Kurt Vonnegut, mainly because his books are not only insightful, but really funny. He has a way of reassuring you that you're not alone in your negative feelings, but that you can still have some fun. Whenever I'm in the dumps, I'm reaching for a book by Vonnegut

Shakespeare I believe is the greatest writer of all time, we use so much of his language an imagery that has seeped into the social conscious. It's an amazement.

My favourite author is Shakespeare. Not because the reason aforementioned, but because it's just really really good stories than transcend time.

Bret Easton Ellis
Ernest Hemingway
F. Scott Fitzgerald

All three because they created their own styles and voices in a literary world where plaigarism and " borrowing " are all too common...They all captured the worlds they inhabited so honestly and so profoundly that they blurred the lines between reality and fiction...They made their art seem artless, and that is their triumph.

I am not articulate enough to put into words the specifics of why I like each author.

Considering the authors you listed, you may like some of Harlan Ellison's works. Not quite sci/fi like Niven (Neutron Star is one of my fav short stories) and not quite horror like Crichton but Ellison writes what is known as speculative fiction. Good stuff!

Gina, you absolutely have me with Robert Heinlein & Isaac Asimov but I would like to add Frank Herbert just to make the list complete.

Shakespeare may well have been one of the great writers of all time, but I find his stories are all a little old & stale.

Shakespeare, of course, is among the greatest writers to ever pick up a pen.

But in terms of modern authors, I'm a huge Vonnegut fan. I just finished Slaughterhouse, and I'm going to begin Cat's Cradle soon. His criticism of free will and insight on psychology is just brilliant. His perspective is as amazing as Shakespeare's virtuosic writing style.

The greatest writer in my opinion has to be Dante Alighieri.
The world is said to be divided between Dante and Shakespeare, and I fall in the Dante camp.

As for my favourite writer, I am very fond of John Steinbeck, William Blake, T.S Elliot, Edgar Allen Poe, Philip Larkin, Albert Camus... I could go on and on and not be able to choose.

All time greatest - I agree with those before me... Shakespeare hands down.

"[FONT=&quot]Man delights not me, nor woman neither, though by your smiling you seem to say so." - From Hamlet

Just watched Hamlet... the Mel Gibson version.

My favorite author: Anne Bishop... such passion in her writing... I'd kill to live in one of her stories...
