So I ordered some glasses on-line last week and they came in the mail today.
I am very pleased with them. Perfect fit and they look great on me.
I picked up a pair of rimless glasses with memory stainless steel arms (they will never bend out of shape) and a pair of sunglasses. Everything for less than $90
These same glasses would have cost me well over $200 locally without the sunglasses.

The site was GreatEyeglasses.com and they had a pretty cool feature where you upload a picture of yourself and you can see what they look like on you.

Has anyone else ever bought glasses on-line before?

I haven't personally, but that's what my dad did.

Not many people know over here that Opticians are legally obliged to give you your prescription if you ask for it.

Last time I went they gave me my prescription without me needing to ask. That's why I was so shocked I'm -6.5 in both eyes despite having more difficulty reading the chart with my left eye as opposed to my right.

I wouldn't personally buy my glasses online, I find it helpful to talk to the optician about the type I need/want and they measured my whole face so I knew they were going to fit perfectly.

I've been wearing contacts for over a year now and would take them any day over glasses.

Good for you though. I know people who have been able to get a pair of reading glasses from the drugstore and be happy with them lol.

I haven't. Thanks for the link though. I'm due to have another eye exam sometime soon. As soon as I schedule one.

Everyone in the UK is handed their prescription along with their glasses, without having to ask. I have bought glasses online from glassesdirect.com, and I would never go down that route again. (Well, maybe.... but only if my frames and prescription were completely identical to my previous order from the optician.) My eyes did not hit the optimal spot in the lenses inside the frame I chose online. This was due to the way the frames fit around my ears and face, and the correct fit and angle is something only an optician can sort out. I think these sites are great for repeat prescriptions, but only once you've been properly fitted by a professional.

I haven't bought glasses in years. I wear contact lenses though, which I do order online.

Had a great time at my last eye test. They've got a little machine now that you put one eye to and you can see a grey circle. White flashes appear briefly on the circle and you have to click a buzzer when you see one. I didn't see a damn thing. Not one out of a hundred. The poor trainee who was doing the test was getting really confused about it, until her supervisor came over and explained that since I'm -7 in both eyes, I've got no chance. They're only meant to do it up to -4 or something.

All eye doctors are required to give you your prescription, they are not allowed to refuse. It's just that most people don't ask for it.
Another thing is the measurements. If you ask your doctor to include all of the measurements on your prescription he will, it won't be an extra.

When I ordered my glasses online, I included all of the important measurements that were on my prescription. So they were a perfect fit and the lenses were made to the specs of the spacing of my eyes, which is the Pupillary Distance (PD)

If you don't have all of that information, I wouldn't suggest buying on-line

It's different in the UK. The prescription is meted out by an optician, and the rest is done by a fitter. The only measurements given to a patient are those measured by the optician, which does not include the specific requirements of an individual pair of frames.

I haven't bought new glasses since 2004, mainly because I have to have high index lenses and it gets crazy expensive. My prescription hasn't changed enough to require new lenses anyway. :) I do, however, order my contacts online because they're almost half the price, even with shipping. :thumbup

I no longer need glasses. Woo!! But now I miss them. I'm thinking of buying non perscription pair to wear on occasion!
