In your case V you could do one of two things. You could avoid it or if you feel you are being slandered you could confront the individuals and let them know you don't appreciate the things being said about you.

honestly...im pretty gossippy. But I dont START shit about people...i just trust people too easily and tend to tell people I "trust" what is going on with so and so....im bad about that. But when it comes to SERIOUS stuff, i wont open my mouth, I have learned my lesson on that shit! Matt is right, he is as anti-gossip as they come...I used to tell him "omg so and so on otz is doing _____" and he would throw stuff at me and tell me "I DONT WANT TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR MESSAGE BOARD DRAMA WOMAN!" (ok thats half true, minus the throwing shit part). V, some people also gossip when they are jealous. They are probably jealous of your good looks hun!

Seems to me, that someone is worried about getting thier toes stepped on, by somebody who they know is better then them, Sounds like something to be proud of to me.
Gossip ( especially in a new environment) can be very hard,, and yes sometimes even painful, The only thing that can be done is to ride it out, or confront it, But more often then not, everyone has been the gossipers victim at one point or another, and though they may nt put much stock into what that person is saying, they may feel safer to play along then be the next victim themselves, but eventually they will bore of it.
