Going fishing

I love fishing! I prefer the ocean because there is so much variety. You never know what you'll bring up. You always have a story when you go out too since you are more exposed to danger.

I like yellow tail and halibut.

I will lake fish as well since I like it so much! That's more quiet and reflective.

I live on the Missouri where the Walleye is king. All the pros fish 'em within 1 mile of my house. I fish em too but not for trophies. My largest was 5.2 Lbs. I also fish catfish. My largest channel cat was 13 lbs, largest flathead cat was 28 lbs. I've fished in many states, ocean, bays, rivers, streams, you name it. Have fun on your outing Fred.

I have never fished Walleye waters. I have caught my share of bass, bream, crappie & catfish. Never really caught anything I would classify as a trophy. Biggest bass just under 7 pounds. Largest catfish about 12 pounds. Biggest fish I have ever caught were some grasscarp which topped out around 30 pounds. I do love to fish when I have the time. Usually on small water out of my jon boat.

Here's some grasscarp I caught:

The serenity on the water is good for the soul.

It is Fred and I have some terrific memories of fishing with my Grandpa. :)

Getting out on the lake, just as dawn broke, the water is like glass. The bow of the boat cuts through the water making ripples that go forever. The smell of the lake water mixed with the boat fuel and garlic bait.

Then sitting there, line in the water, waiting for the bobble or strike. He would coo to the fish, "Here fishy, fishy, fishy" as he threw the bait in.

Some of my fondest memories are fishing with my grandfather. We would hit the lake before daylight. A lot of times there was a heavy fog over the water and every fish you heard roll sounded huge. We fished topwater at first light which was exciting. We talked and we shared and we were just two people away from the rest of the world. I wish I could fish with him again. He passed away 7 years ago.

I like humane fishing :) I always toss mine back and use hooks that don't kill their poor little mouths, but I do really enjoy some quality fishing time!

I have caight a lot of fish some days and put everyone of them back. Most freshwater here has an overabundance of bream or other members of the sunfish family. I have actually been asked to remove everyone of those caught because of population control.

Sounds just like my days with my Grandpa. I know that heavy fog well! It was very exciting when the first strike came too. He was patient and taught me a lot. Mine passed 20 years ago.

Mine always outfished me. He got excited every time I hooked a fish. I still remember him coaching me, "Don't Hoss Him!, Son!" "Don't let him jump!" "Don't let him get away!" He was a great person to spend so much time with me. Some days it felt like I stayed hung-up on things more than I fished.

Yeah, "Keep the tip of the rod up. Keep the pressure on!"

Oh yes! Darn I could get real tangled up in the weeds. LOL

Not fond of bass fishing. I hate dealing with the weeds.

We had a place on Lake Huron and would catch perch out front. Before my time it was good for Lake Trout but not in close. They planted Salmon and during the spring there would be runs. I never caught one. You had to either get up by dawn or go out to deeper water and my boat was not big enough.

fished Lake St. Clair for walleye but not enough to be good at it.

Mostly did inland fishing and caught bluegills.

I really need to clean up the boat and get it running. Wish I had a place to keep it on a lake. Too lazy to trailor it to use it much anymore.

Lot's of folks minimize the lowly bluegill but that is a damn good pan fish. Crappy too.
