Ever thought about being a mall cop? If there is one nearby. Those are not great paying but around here they have positions available a bit.

I will say that I chased down the job I have now. Two days after filling out my app I started calling on it every few days. Between other candidates and the boss going on vacation, it took me about three weeks before I got the interview and got the job.

I don't think they even bothered to call any of the references I gave as I never heard from anyone that they had called.

If you want it, like others have said, chase it down and make it yours.

Nearest mall is quite a ways away, though I might be moving closer to it soon, I'll definitely be applying there if I do.

DK...I'm sorry to hear about this and I know how frustrating it can be. I know how badly you wanted and needed this position. I know my advice, or any for that matter could easily fall on deaf ears considering how long you have been unemployed and searching for work. My advice is keep trying and don't give up. I wish I could help! Maybe you could move to Ohio and I'd hire you ;)

If you are not choosy about a job, and would take anything at all so you can afford to eat and pay bills, I would suggest trying a restaurant.. as a dishwasher..

When my husband and I arrived in the US with a green card, our first jobs were as dishwashers.. That was in 1969.. a lifetime ago.. and many restaurants didn't have machines, btw... now it's easier with them..

It is hard work, but many restaurants will let you eat for free ... That way, you save some money on food and have some extra for bills.. :p
On some, you can graduate from washing dishes to washing pots.. and the next step is helping with food preparation.. Maybe you'll find your next career as a cook somewhere.. ;)

Those are the type of jobs I've been applying at, none of them have gave me an interview :(

Jeezz.. that is so ridiculous!!
Where do you live?..
It's been a long time since I've worked, or hired anyone, but I never made it a requirement to give someone a job as a dishwasher, waiter or waitress!..
If we needed one, we would hire them and let them try for a few days.. :(

I live in Ilion, New York right now, moved here last year from Cave Junction, Oregon.

You are way up there!.. I had to look it up, because I never heard of it..
I lived in NYC for 25 years and we had a restaurant near Mohegan lake, about an hour away from the city.. so my knowledge goes only that far..

It looks like it's a small place.. is there any possibility that you could move near the closest big city from there?..
We live in a small town in NJ now, and there is nothing around here for anyone looking for a job, and I think it's the same way all over..

Hang in there and don't loose hope.. something will turn out..

I can't really move anywhere right now considering I have no money coming in and wouldn't be able to support myself until I found something in a bigger city, I'm lucky enough to have some family here that are letting me stay with them until I can find something.

I would find three or four people that you know you can depend on and always use them. I have a set of 5 that I use. They range from previous boss's to previous co workers. I don't use friends or family members unless it asks for personal references.

Admittedly, I'm wondering that all this "reference stuff" works by contacting other people by phone. Here, in Germany, you get a reference letter from every employer you've ever been working for. Whenever applying for a job you attach copies of all of these reference letters.
I really wonder why over there it is handled in such a complicated way (which doesn't seem to work well).

:-/
You know what? This system wins. I like it. So much less of a hassle for everyone involved.

So a bit of an update, the lady there is claiming that she was definitely going to hire me and was only waiting to hear from my references, and that she left messages on all of their voice mail and never received a single reply back :mad
