I'm sure some of you remember that I had a job interview last week, So I called on the job today like I was supposed to and the lady tells me that not a single one of my references are answering their phones. Then she says to call her in another week. THEN she changes her mind and says that she'll call me if she's interested in me. Which pretty much means NO FUCKING CHANCE. These are all people I've talked to about this beforehand who KNEW that I was putting them as references and KNOW that they might get calls, and STILL they can't even answer their fucking phones. CELL PHONES no less so it's not like they just weren't home all the times they've been called, don't tell me to put you as a reference and then not even answer your phone, I wish I could remember exactly who I put down for this specific application so that I could call them up and tell them off myself, but ALAS I'm not sure and don't want to end up calling the wrong person.

I might, then then I'm not sure if there's a point, I don't want to ruin any friendships over this. I needed this so fucking bad, in all the time I've been out of work this is the ONLY interview I've even been given, everyone has pretty much made it sound like I was getting the job, but of course it's not going to work out for me. Why WOULD anything work out for me? Nothing ever has before, I'm so fucking sick of life right now.

That does suck. I've been asked for references before and the furthest was someone in New Zealand ringing me asking about an ex-colleague. Naturally I replied and gave them a decent reference.

I don't put myself down for one if I don't intend to answer. Sorry to hear about the potential loss of this chance given what's happened.

Yeah I'd never tell someone to put me and then fuck them over like that, if someone calls me when I'm not home I CALL THE NUMBER BACK to see what it was about, especially if it's a business from a state where someone lives who I know is using me as a reference. but like I said I put cell numbers for most of my references so it's not even like people just haven't been home every time my potential employers have tried to call them.

Call her back and explain that some people don't answer calls they don't recognize... that you will let them know the call is coming...

At least it's worth a try

Tell her that this job is very important to you and if you need to drag your references down there, you will. Show her you care and will go the extra mile for the job, that will be in your favor.

I guess this is what I get for placing trust in people I know to be fuckups, but I honestly thought that they would at least answer their phones, I mean how much effort does this take? And Tim I'm going to call her back to find out who I used and what times she's been calling and stuff, I'm afraid it's probably too late to get this job though, but at least I'll know who NOT to trust in the future.

Most of my references are out of state as I've lived in Oregon for the last 20 years and my entire work and school history have taken place there.

That does suck. I too never tell anyone I will be a reference if I don't intend to give a good one. Someone who I used to work with whose a nutcase used me as a reference without my permission. Well it was for Homeland Security and I sure as hell don't want the nation's security in the hand of a nutcase. I tactfully let my feelings be known. First time I've ever done it.

I was also once denied a job at the last second, in fact I was just about to sign the papers and arrange a date for my employee orientation. They had to end it all on a stupid technicality that was beyond my control which really pissed me off.

Don't give up Dk, keep trying, something will come eventually. I know I can't completey relate to you, but just know that I wish the best.

I don't know what to do at this point, it seems like Joining the military might be the only option I have.

Admittedly, I don't really understand that much, especially the part with the "reference", but I understand that your situation is really difficult. :-(
I wish the best.

(sry, my limited vocabulary sometimes makes it impossible to find the right words, but at least I wanted to express my best wishes for you :ninja)

References are people who you've worked with in the past, or just people you know that potential employers call to get a sense of who you are, what kind of worker you are, how dependable you are, Etc.

Ah yes, okay, I see. Damn annoying, when those references aren't available (for whatever reasons .__.)

I don't know if I plan on doing that or not, what's done is done, I don't think it would be worth ruining any friendships over this.

I'd be willing to be it's b/c they don't answer calls from numbers they don't recognize. I don't, either, but if I know that someone has used me for a reference I do b/c you never know if it might be the job prospect calling. Sorry your people let you down, DK. :(
