I tried looking for a thread on this in the forum. Must be one around here somewhere. I thought Accountable had a freedom thread at one point. If any moderator knows, I'll be happy to transfer content. In the mean time...

What does freedom mean to you? Where does freedom start and stop? How it effected by the more people living in a society? My real question: Should large multinational corporations have the freedom to ship your job, and all jobs like your overseas so they can reap the profits and you can eat dirt for all they care?

Of course i say "HELL NO>" :D Freedom is a balance between the individual and a functional society. I see government as a tool to defend the average people from those who wield power. Course you have to have people in government who sympathies with average people.

For every action, there is a reaction and with freedom comes consequenses. You're free to jump off a cliff if you want but the result is, you will die. To a lesser extent, this kind of thing pretty much applies to everything.

i dont think of freedom in such economic terms

i prefer to equate my freedom to my ability to move around (travel), associate with whomever i choose, speak my mind and generally live a peaceful existence unhindered by direct daily contact with law enforcement/government authosity that would hinder any of the above

all within reason of course, and by reason I mean for example my freedom to speak my mind stops when I croos certian lines of acceptable behaviour

I'm so far agreeing with this point of view. It very implies what the idea of freedom and thought of it is, so I'm all for Peter Parka's view.

It means what we can do for ourselves within the letter of the law. basically we have laws to govern but we also have certain freedoms within those laws to do as we please.

Where does freedom start and stop?

Honestly.....wherever you want, as long as again it's lawful. I mean, I'm not talking as a moralist but in certain situations the laws are there, example : We are allowed to smoke cigarettes, but we aren't allowed to smoke them in public areas.

Should large multinational corporations have the freedom to ship your job, and all jobs like your overseas so they can reap the profits and you can eat dirt for all they care?

If it's lawful yes. Morally you may be opposed but as long as it's not illegal overseas unfair labour etc then I don't see the problem, law-wise.

I think of freedom as the ability to do whatever you want with no consequences, obviously that is never the case, so IMO there is no such thing as true freedom as we all have people we must answer to and consequences for our actions.

Is freedom to do what the law says an adequate description of it? What if you live under an oppressive system who says you can't complain, is this freedom?

When a citizen give a secret to a foreign interest, he is called a traitor and jailed or executed. But when a sharp business mind disenfranchises millions of citizens out of their jobs, he is called brilliant. I don't believe you should have the freedom to do this. Wherever you live, you are grouped into society, banded together for mutual benefit. How free this system can successfully function is based on the ethics of the participants especially those in power.
