Yes they were only there for the last battle of the Revolution, but without the naval blockade we wouldn't have been able to trap the British and blockade British ships from refreshing their supplies, we wouldn't have been able to ultimately defeat them.
Oh and they ran from Vietnam because at least they were wise enough to realize they couldn't have been able to defeat them on their home turf, which is more than I can say for Nixon.
