Jesus! Did not common sense tell them that maybe something horrible might happen if you show crime live on telly? :smiley24:

[h=1]Fox News apologises over live 'suicide' in Phoenix, Arizona[/h] _63189161_arizona_phoenix_2012.gif
The US network Fox News has apologised for showing a man apparently shooting himself in the head on live television.
Fox News on Friday was covering a high-speed chase that began in Phoenix, Arizona, using a live helicopter shot.
After driving for dozens of miles into the desert, the motorist stopped and ran on a dirt road. He then appeared to put a handgun to his head and fire.
Anchor Shepard Smith later apologised to viewers for not cutting away. "We really messed up," he said.
"We're all very sorry. That didn't belong on TV."
Phoenix police say the chase may have started with a carjacking.

You must not get many car chases over there. Here they are always showing them. A week ago the bank robbers were throwing money from the car trying to get the crowds to block the cops that were after them. They need to adopt a 1 minute delay for them.

Can't help wondering, why the apology? The guy offed himself in a public place. He'd still be dead even if he wasn't caught on camera. It's not like they contributed to his death.

Death is a staple of what passes for news thesedays. People want visual, people want car chases. They seem to think that real life is like the movies, or a crappy x-box game. But they want it all nicely sanitised. Fox screwed up by showing it live. They had no control over what the viewers were seeing.

Lives new is a part of life..we cant predict what will happen..such as some guy popping himself in the head.

They had no control over what the viewers were seeing.
Then why did you say they screwed up?

Best one I saw is where they were chasing a guy that stole a tow truck...was about a 45 minutes chase.
Spike strips..flat tires on fire..other tire gone..now on rims..the entire truck eventually caught fire..only reason he stopped is because it was to smokey to see inside

Then why did you say they screwed up?

because they lost control of what they were broadcasting, and clearly breached what they considered to be their own standards. Why else would they apologise?

Live news is trash TV. Nobody needs to see crime happening in real time. A simple 90 second delay would have prevented this from going to air, but Fox elected not to, presumably out of fear that another network would screen the story seconds before them.

I think it a sad statement on what passes for journalism today. Why the fuck is it worthy of breaking news coverage and live helicopter video when some jackass runs from the cops? I just bury my head in my hands sometimes thinking how shitty and commercialized news has become.

I know... I just now saw it... and frankly... they couldn't really know what would have happened... it was a sudden event after all.

Sure, if they were a little more on their toes, they could have prevented it from being shown... but now it's pretty much all over youtube...

I would post up the video, but I'm not sure if that violates the rules of this website... so I'll just say... "to see it again, view it on youtube"

Big deal.

Better him using the gun on on himself other than civilian or LEO.

That said, he is a human being and it's sad that his life had to come to this.

Why did he run all that way if he was going to shoot himself? That seemed a bit pointless...The presenters reaction though. Pure *panic*
