I don't know if it will be nationally accepted...but I could definitely see some low income areas incorporating this idea...since most fast food places are franchisee owned...they might be able to make the decision on their own to accept this form of payment. If this ends up happening, I'd LOVE to see a study done on obesity on sections of the population using food stamps in this way...or statistics released on how many food stamp receipents are using their food stamps and for what particular fast food establishments are visited the most by these receipents...I think in five years time, these numbers would be staggering imo...

Even if you don't allow people to spend their food stamp money at fast food restaurants, they can still buy junk food at the grocery store.

I agree but pretty much all fast food is unhealthy.

True, which is why doing this is probably a bad idea. But people will still buy what's convenient and cheap at the grocery store. It's almost just another means to the same end result.

The only way you can really stop people from eating unhealthy is to dictate specific foods they can and cannot buy.

I'm ok with that so long as its reasonable. I know the WIC program has strict limitations on what you can purchase with it.

It's interesting, because food stamps are usually the thing that helps people buy healthier foods (sure, many buy Cheetos and cake with them) but even the poorest of the poor can afford fast food. A meal can be like two bucks. That's the whole problem with fast food, the cheap prices making it irresistible. The poor go there constantly, resulting in children who are nutritionally disadvantaged.

It's true, WIC is really quite better and promotes healthier eating.

Yea, WIC is a good idea.

I think WIC should be extended with the option to buy more fruits and vegetables. Some WIC checks seem to allow it but most only let people buy milk, meat, cheese, and eggs. I'm not sure why that is.
