That's not an assumption. If you had somebody close to you burried there, you would know.

You can't count as personal loss somebody who you might have run into back in Jr. High but haven't talked to in 10 years.
I actually lost a few freinds in this "war". For nothing.

Then why would you want the war to end without leaving behind a stable, self-sufficient government? Shouldn't you want there to be something to show for their deaths?

I'm for a gradual withdrawal over an extended period of time. Odds are things will be up and running enough for us to leave by then.

Regardless of your beliefs about the reasons for the war, would you consider the removal of a brutal dictator and the establishment of a stable, long-term government in one of the world's most volatile regions a cause worthy of your friend's sacrifice?

Well for one, he didn't sign up for some sort of "glorious patriotic cause". He was poor, and needed college money. In fact, he was a lot like me, maybe even more.

I really doubt anything we set up will be long term. it will either be us going back in to put the government in "check" if they disagree with us (see past US history, we love doing that stuff) or another dictator will gain control in the future. So really, I just don't think he died for anything. So no.

I didn't say he signed up for a "glorious patriotic cause". Believe me, I know why people enlist.

But what if it ends up the way I described? Would you still feel he died in vain?

Thats an enormous IF. I don't see it happening. But, in the unlikely situation that a fully functioning, vibrant democracy develops in Iraq, then maybe. But thats a pipedream.

Man, you really have a hard time stepping off of that soapbox, dont ya? Guess it hurts the liberal brain to consider a happy ending in Iraq?

I see absolutely nothing wrong with religious symbols adorning the graves of individuals as long as it represents their religion. But on the same hand, if you are going to put up crosses for Christians, you better be prepared for pentagrams for Wiccans and every other symbol.

How would you guys feel about a Star and Cresent on a grave in Arlington cemetery if the soldier was Islamic? Would it be right to put a cross on his grave?

I do however have a problem with religious symbols put on public lands when they are not associated with an individual. When they are a blanket statement of belief, for instance gates to a cemetery with giant crosses on them. Well not every soldier buried there was Christian... On the same note, I wouldn't want to have the gates decorated with the Star of David either.

Memorials with symbols up already should be left alone. I don't think we should go running around the country dismantling public memorials. I just think we should be a little more careful with new displays... The whole country is not Christian.
