Yeah, 2 people already covered what I was going to say which is that it is recommended that you sneeze into your elbow now (as Audra noted, the inner elbow, LOL).

Of course not, a tissue is much better. But in a situation, for example, when a waiter is taking your order/carrying your food, or a doctor is in a patient's room and talking to that patient, or other situations like this where hygiene is important, if a tissue isn't readily available, the next best thing is to do the action into the spot where your elbow bends(On the inside of your arm). The thing is, it seems weird to a person who doesn't know about this, but once you do it a few times, it becomes a habit.

Ah okay, I see. I just thought it was unusual to put the elbow down as the preferable option on the poster when I always thought tissues were the better choice.

Pretty interesting about the elbows though.

I agree with Dodge sniper

And juz an additional info: In a way yes, tissues are the best option it's just that when one sneezes on a tissue, we are aware that bacteria are living micro-organisms that are able to penetrate the tissue hence it still seeps through the tissue to one's hands. So when someone uses a tissue-it's still advisable to follow through washing your hands. Hence it much more not just hygienically important but infection control wise important to sneeze on one's inner elbow rather than hands/palm or tissue.

The key point here is the HANDWASHING.......that's the UNIVERSAL infection control element. NOT a lot of people wash their hands ( be it they use tissue or not) hence the elbow technique was recommended by the CDCP ( Center for Disease Control and Prevention )
