You've erroneously discounted the concept of momentum.
Yeah I mean England could easily have gone on to lose that game because Ukraine were playing well, all they needed was a goal to really boost themselves. It's one of the things you never really know.

A first half completely dominated by Germany, but only 1-0 up against Greece. It hasn't really been a contest, Germany have been far too good for Greece. Great goal from Lahm too. The only surprise was it took 38 minutes. Germany should already be through, that they aren't is a combination of Germany missing very good chances and Greece remaining resilient.

It's up there. They never turned up. Spain did what they had to do, didn't need to play that well, and still won, which is ominous. Spain/Portugal will be a great game.

England vs Italy tonight, an interesting battle. I think England might have the edge, as Italy are one of the only nations in the world more unpredictable than they are. But you never know, Ballotelli might be on fire.

Neither team is great, but Italy will dominate the middle of the park. Di Natale, Cassano and Balotelli aren't going to cause England too many problems, but they are willing and clever runners.

England/Italy going to extra time. Italy have been much better in large parts, but England have just stuck at it. Should have been many goals with the luck being rode on more than one occasion. Rooney's overhead kick right at the end was a great chance, difficult to take and it would have been grand lacerny, but you have to now and then. It's been painful to watch at times. This is a huge test now.
