You work at company X and have for many years. A co-worker gets busted for looking at porn while at work because some over-zealous IT freak that you manage happened to look over the internet logs and tracks down who the user was. This co-worker gets fired. Now, you being the normal red-blooded human, also have looked at porn in the past, but usually after everyone else has gone home and after normal working hours, but still at work. This co-worker also knows that you have looked because you have passed along URLs with each other.

Do you:
A) Admit to your boss that you have also looked at porn, but that it was after hours and didn't think it was a big deal as long as no one else witnessed it.
OR
B) Try to clean your machine of any evidence and hope that this co-worker hasn't blurted out on you?
OR
C) Fire the guy who found the porn logs before he finds out you have been to questionable sites as well?

Try to rationalize your answer so give some explanation to why you chose the one you did.

well, if hes gonna get fired no question about it, even though it may seem like the right thing to do i wouldnt drag myself into it and get in shit or fired.

ya gotta think bout yourself, in these situations.
I would say the best answer is
B) Try to clean your machine of any evidence and hope that this co-worker hasn't blurted out on you

I would probably say B. I would like to say A as I dont really see it as that big of a deal but I know that would only result in me getting fired!

B. Deny, deny, deny.

You can't save him, but you might as well try to save yourself. And under no circumstances should he rat. He should understand that he got busted and that it wasn't your fault.

Well I would say B, but I need some info first. Do you guys have a god system? Or Big Brother System?

The strictly ethical answer in my opinion would be A. It might even have the surprising result that your boss might appreciate your honesty.

I say C, fire the subordinate for doing too good a job. You don't want rats like this in your organization, they just bring morale down ;)

Its a hypothetical organization, but lets just say its sort of a combo of the two. It doesn't alert anyone to bad activity, but if someone wanted to do the digging, they could certainly find what they wanted and who did it at what time and how long they spent doing it.

I'd be honest with my boss.

This is not a life or death situation - so the greater value here is truth. There is a lesson here to be learned and most times lessons are painful. Hopefully the boss will grant a measure of grace in this situation, if not, it isn't the end of the world.

No, the lesson is you should follow company guidelines and not access porn via their computers as per the employee handbook (in most cases). Losing your job is the consequence of not following the rules.

Companies have a lot more reasons for people to not access porn than just being moral policemen. There are 'sexual harassment' and 'hostile environment' lawsuits that can be filed against the company if others become aware of the activity and become offended. These kinds of cases collectively cost companies billions of dollars each year. There are also computer problems that can arise from accessing such sites, such as viruses and such. Companies spend tons of money in computer security.

. . . but you never know, the boss may show a measure of grace in the situation if you go to them in honesty and let them know it will never ever happen again, even after hours on company computers.

As I stated I was just enjoying making conversation/discussion. It seems as if you are getting a bit riled and I do not understand why.

And again if you could stop bringing up my belief in God in every thread I'd appreciate it. It is always derogative and I do not enjoy it constantly being slung in my direction. I hope you will respect my request. Thanks.

I don't know what other Christians think as I am not their spokesperson.

But stop making assumptions in regards to me please. It is nothing but mean spirited when you constantly make assumptions as to the way I think instead of asking respectful questions out of sincere curiosity.

I'm not, you stated that Christianity is derogatory, I was just a bit taken aback with that is all as I (obviously wrongfully) thought you were in favour of Christianity.:)
