I think we get complacent that because we both speak the same language, we can understand each other. In fact, its a lot different than what we think. Take this in our news for example. I'm not condoning these peopled, I think they should have wised up first (when in Rome) but a minor misunderstanding caused major problems.

WASHINGTON: The United States has an updated rendition for foreign visitors of the expression "Loose Lips Sink Ships" that was used to warn its citizens against unguarded talk during World War II. Apparently, loose quips from tweeting 21st century tourists are as dangerous.

Two European tourists to America found out the hard way that jokes on Twitter is no tittering matter for US security officials. They were detained on arrival at the Los Angeles International airport last week and deported after one of them was said to have tweeted that he was going to "destroy America" during the trip. They insisted that the expression is British slang for partying.

US Homeland Security officials were unimpressed - or unconvinced. After a 12-hour detention during which they said they were interrogated in all seriousness about their mission in America by humorless officers, including questions about another tweet referring to "digging up Marilyn Monroe," they were put on a plane back to England.

The episode, which indicates that the US security establishment is now monitoring social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook in its effort to safeguard American interests, has raised questions about how well security folks understand social media and its patois, and at what point innocuous banter is regarded as a national security threat. There are also concerns about whether overzealous security mandarins are wasting resources by chasing online phantoms.

In one controversial case relating to India, Vikram Buddhi, an Indian doctoral student from Purdue University, has been in prison for more than five years after he allegedly posted messages on the Internet calling on the people of Iraq to resist the American invasion and urging them to kill then President Bush and his vice-president Dick Cheney.

While some have argued that the Buddhi case relates to overzealous prosecution of an online caper, the latest incident, one report said, "appeared to demonstrate a less-than-full understanding of social media by agents." The offending tweet by Irishman Leigh Van Bryan, posted on January 16, read: "@MelissaxWalton free this week for a quick gossip/prep before I go and destroy America?"

Instructive from the flap is a warning to social media schmoozers to refrain from casual talk about security issues. US security agencies have made no secret of the fact that they are developing plans -- and apps -- to scour the Internet for any potential threat to national security. Plans include trolling social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace, looking for profiles and patterns that add up to threats.

People should be aware that the US is the last place you want to fuck around jokingly, something us Brits with our famous sarcasm should be aware of.

I saw this yesterday. *smh*

I guess I could say a bit of critical thinking skills could go a long way - on BOTH sides.... Mostly our side tho.

I mean really? Really?

Like our tourism isn't in the crapper enough.............. If my little peabrain could figure out what they meant then our TSA personnel should be able to figure it out.... Then again....... *stopping before I hit a rant*

Reminds me of a funny story. I got invited to a workmates rock contest about 15 odd years ago. He introduced me to his mate and I instantly knew all wasn't well when he came up to shake hands wearing a star trek top. Later on I found he had inpregnated two girls and phoned them up at 2 in the morning accusing them of stealing his sperm. He also got kicked out of a nice, country local pub because on a Sunday afternoon, when families are in having a relaxing meal, he pretty much shouted out in explicit details a story about how he had oral sex the night before. The best bit though was he went to the USA for a holiday with a mate. You DO NOT JOKE OR FUCK WITH USA CUSTOMS! So they went through customs and a big crew cutted Yank asked them if they had anything to declare. The twat said "nothing apart from half an ounce of cocaine shoved up my arse". They got cavity searched, both of them, his friend refused to even speak to him for the three weeks they were over there!

The way I view it is, if you're in another country you should be on your best behavior. Simple as that...

In high school one of the French teacher told me a story. Years ago she used to take a group of her French students to Canada. On one trip, right at the border, some kid blurts out that there's a bomb in the car as a joke. Border person hears it and searched the vehicle, luggage, everything. It took a pretty long time too.

Bottom line is, don't act like an idiot in other countries lol
