My wife is an avid reader and I'm thinking of getting one for her and I know zip about them. Here's a couple of questions that I have and hopefully someone with direct experience will come along and help me with this.

- Anyone have any ideas on what to look for or recommend a particular brand / model?
- How easy is it to get free books and where would one go to get 'em?
- Are they hard on the eyes? I ask that because she has trouble sitting in front of a computer monitor for any length of time and I wouldn't want to see the reader end up collecting dust.

She doesn't know I'm thinking of this so if you tell her I'll hunt you down and make you holler mama.

OK we need to talk.. :)

I know about the next generation of eBooks coming out..

Most first gens were done on what was called ePaper LCD Displays.. The newer types about to be released will be on a whole new technology. This would like the Kindle and such..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_paper

If you are looking for expandability in the screen ( pinch style ) made famous by Apple for larger type sets and ease on eyes. WAIT....

Although Apple may have made it popular ( pinch style ) it did not invent it and by far as Multi-Touch was actually really invented in Canada..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-touch

Hence why everyone in his dog uses the same technology today..

You will see it soon in the new eBook readers as new screen technology is about to be released for these book..

I'm with Cod. I like BOOKS.

Oh I never said I didn't like Books..

I just bought the new John Grisham hard copy book at Costco's.. ;)

I just think there is a place for eBook for some.. Personally I just use the eBook in my MP3 player with Touch screen for plane flights..

yes but when i drop a book it doesn't cost me anything to repair/replace it..and i dont have to worry about people stealing it ...unless its one of the rare ones...which most wouldn't be able to determine that it was valuable

Ok... so I took my wife to Best Buy last night and used the old " I need to buy a new mouse tactic." :24: While there we looked at the readers and came to the same conclusion. They are going to be a passing fad like the Pet Rocks were. But... while in the store I came upon these new gizmos called iPads and we stopped to mess with them a couple of minutes. Since then I've been thinking more along the lines that " she " could really use one of them. Am I thinking clearly? :D

If I was to buy one I would need to buy a router as well right ( my computer is hard wired and wants to stay that way ). If I had a router could I just hook it up to my Shaw cable in the livingroom that's connected to my tv or do I have to run it through my computer which is something I really don't want to do.

Router they go with the hardwired computer... or at least that's how our Shaw set up is... :surrender

As for an iPad.. they sound much more useful and fun.. plus when she's not paying attention you could borrow it for yourself :p

I know you use 'em for computers but what I wanna know is can I use one as a stand alone for an iPad.

Jim tried that the first laptop he got me... it backfired.. he couldn't get near it.. :ninja
It was driving me crazy so we just went and looked at them. I told her about the eBook reader thing and she smiled. Then we talked about the iPad and I think we agreed it would be necessary to get each of us one. That would stop any fights except the one where I would have to do all the downloading and shit like that. She's askeered to do that kinda thing.

If you don't have a wireless router or access point currently, then yes you would need to purchase a wireless router. The router goes between your DSL or Cable modem and your computer. So your computer would still be hardwired, it would just plug into the router, which would plug into the modem. It's a far better idea to have a router wit ha firewall between you and your internet connection anyway.

retro I think you missed what I am inquiring about. I know I need a router for an iPad but lets pretend I don't have a computer in the house right now. Is it possible to connect a router to my existing cable and use it as a stand along product to deliver internet to an iPad?

as long as the router is configured you dont need a PC for the WiFi

Ipad is a good choice. it is also an E reader as im sure you know.

My mother has the Nook and then she also has an Ipad. She uses it a lot for games and the E book app on the Ipad. The nook is just collecting dust. she uses the Ipad everyday tho

she can get the Nook app, Kindle App ect and download books from them. and you can find free books too
