I'm not making excuses but there is a huge amount of oil involved in delivering goods and services in a biggish country as the U.S. Not to mention all those commuters. Many years ago I read in National Geographic an article that compared Paris with Chicago which at the time had approximately the same population number. However, while Paris was approx 20 square miles, Chicago was approx 200 square miles. To be more efficient, you can pack everyone into a smaller space, but traditionally we've had the space and gas was cheap forever, except for the 72 oil embargo when we should have seen the writing on the wall and made our move 30+ years ago. Hindsight, too bad it's not more helpful.
