Are you for or against? or somewhere in the middle? Do you buy into the argument that it doesn't matter since it will take X years for the oil to come to market? Or do you feel if you don't start sometime, nothing will change?

Discuss.

edit: Ah, all these views and no comments. Ok, I'll go first. I think we should.

I think we should be putting our efforts into coming up with alternative energy sources instead of drilling for more of that environmentally unfriendly fossil fuel.I'm sure a lot of people are for it in hopes that increased supply would lead to lower fuel prices, but as much as it does hurt to pay the price at the pump,if it goes down people will have less incentive to make the changes we need to be making. :)

I don't think the government has any right to tell us what we cannot and can do with products. What right does the government have? We need to drill. I say, forget the environment, we need to keep civilization moving.

I voted No, with the above concerns:homo:.... if we do more drilling, then it just puts changes onto the back burner and I really do think we need a kick in the arse to get this wasteful society to do something better! I mean when you read 40% of the Earths animals will be extinct in the next, what was it, 50 years, you really should be looking at cleaner ways of running the world.

Research T. Boone Pickens plan, there's a guy who has made billions on oil but thinks our future strategy should be a combo of:

A. Reducing our short term relaince on foriegn oil by drilling domestically.

B. Long term reduction of the comsumption of oil.

C. Development of alternative energy sources.

He has already supported financially efforts for wind farms in Texas;)

He is a visionary, and of course he's already made his oil welath so he could give a shit about not selling another drop:p

And this effort of to drill or not to drill is more complex than just yes or no? And what it will solve, it will immediately alleviate cost by calming the speculators on wall street down a little and help to stabilize oil prices where they are comfortable for everyone (roughly $60-70 a bbl).

That puts oil back on the supply/demand curve...

I'm glad you agree about the oil thing, but I hope the homo smilie means like, homie. No offence intended to anyone and I know this is wandering off topic somewhat, but not being familiar with this smilie I'm sure you can understand my concern and my urge to say something. :cool

Thanks for the views.

I think we should also continue to persure other types of energy supplies, but not discount this opportunity. Has anyone read into the new method of oil drilling called "horizontal drilling" ? Read up on it. It's currently being done in Ft.Worth Texas!

As for the government telling us what to do, wake up Carthage, they've been doing that since there ever was more than 2 people on the earth.

If you look into the bigger picture here, drilling is not about lower gas at the pump. It's not about the environment either. It's about national security. period. Why do you think we have strategic reserves? I think it's about 700 million gallons right now. How long do you think that would last? Oh and that's for the military, not you or me to have for our cars. Some politicians want the gov't to put the reserves on the market to lower gas prices. What country are they working for? Not ours! I'm sure Iran & N Korea can't wait for that to happen. If we use up our reserves or lower them, what do we do if there was an attack on US soil (larger than 911)? Ask Saudi Arabia to please send us more? HA Get you head out of the sand. (no pun intended) It's not about lowering the price at the pump........................it never was.

Personally, I can't wait to be able to buy a Chevy Volt.

They have been drilling "horizontally" for decades.

And I agree with you on the nations security, but most of your consumers want cost reduction first, and it's obvious now that we have sold out our security for what once was the more efficient way of obtaining oil;)

It's now that everyone sees how dangerous the business really is, there are some of us, inthe business who have known for years that it was going to come to this...

You want to know the only department in a global oil company that is bigger than accounting?

Security

For years most didn't know what K&R insurance was, or that Mercs were having to be hired to bail energy workers abroad out of trouble.....But everyone wanted oil.....Just not in their back yard.

So the solution isn't short term, it will take years and years. And just driving an electric car, doesn't end out dependence, I mean that's what Al Gore wants us to believe:D

He invented the Volt...wait:unsure:

Alaska is HUGE. Drilling there is a logical conclusion. I have heard that along the pipe line is where Carribou(sp) gather and stand because of the warmth?
Either way - as a nation we basically refuse to reduce usage on a drastic level so we must find more resources.

Exactly. But it's a start. There is not one single energy supply out there for the US to use. Even the electric power has to be generated somehow. But if we continue to do nothing, then we have only ourselves to blame, not the oil companies.

As a power source option other than oil, I think McCain talking about how he served on nuke powered boats and they are perfectly safe, completely misses the point when endorsing nuclear. If there is an issue with nuclear power plants it is waste disposal. How many thousands, tens of thousands (?) of barrels of nuclear waste are currently sitting around the country? It is the only issue I have with nuclear as a power source.

Does anyone know what France does with their nuclear waste? Do they have thousands of barrels sitting around too?

The issue of waste storage has been a sticky point for sure. Back in the '70s there was a proposal to encapsulate the waste in a "plastic-like" block. I use the term plastic-like as I do not know what the material was. The intended depository was a burial site in the middle of some desolate state. As we see that hasn't happened. But more interestingly, the article addressed how to mark the spot as "dangerous" for the next 10,000 years. It brings up a less though of issue, "how do you put up a sign for 10,000 years"? What symbol or signage will be understood or last for that long? For now, I believe, much of the waste is stored on site. At lest until it is shipped out in the middle of the night.

I voted yes, got to look for alternative energies but we need something to keep us going until they are a viable alternative, besides, I'm glad the US is producing its own oil, the amount you guys go through.
