Domain name help

I bought a .com domain name, but all I can really figure out is how to forward it to a preexisting site. I can't figure out how to get the .com name to show up in the address bar, instead of going to the site and showing the other link. Any ideas?

For example, if offtopicz was a proboards forum, instead of typing in www.offtopicz.net and getting sent to proboards.offtopicz.net I want to type in the domain name and the address bar not change to the old link.
