Do you spank ( or believe in ) the kids ?

Me and my three brothers were raised in a house where spankings were common (spare the rod, spoil the child was firmly believed) and I'm not aggressive at all. That wasn't my point at all.

The article in the opening was referring to aggressiveness. That was was I was responding to. Though you did say that spanking teaches that hitting is a way of solving problems, which imply that it teach aggression.

I knew my posts would probably offend because I'm sure that many disagree with my views, that wasn't my intent.

I'm perfectly fine with that fact that you disagree with spanking. My problem was the parents who care comment.

Maybe I can boil my beliefs down in a quick sentence to help clarify.

Spanking isn't the difference in whether a child is good or bad, it's the consistency in discipline received from the parents that makes the difference.

I don't think anyone would necessarily disagree with this. But I have seen far too often where the discipline used does not work for the child in question but the parents continue with it. Putting a child in timeout or grounding them consistently is great but if the child doesn't mind those punishments, they're still going to be brats.

With that being said. As a parent I made the decision to live in a house without constant yelling and screaming at my kids (exactly what my brother went through with his kids) and without spanking.

Good for you two for making it work for you.

We rarely got a smacked bottom, it had to be somethings really serious/wrong/bad for us to get one... like opening the car door while on the highway and unbuckling our seat belts. Or getting firecrackers and lighting them off in the back yard without an adult.

It was generally severe last resort, our parents were creative with parenting.

I think spanking kids isn't a great idea, but if needed from time to time, it's alright. I think once a kid is about 9, they are getting too old for it. My mom used to spank me even when I was like 12, and I just felt that wasn't right.

Basically, it should be for very rare cases, and not doing it at all in my opinion is best.

Exactly! Totally with ya! I will sit and reason with my daughter for 20 minutes rather than hit her. However, if she's being completely out of line, and just won't allow the information to register, she's gonna get popped. Just a waker upper, not a beating. I fully believe in disciplining kids the old fashioned way, but I won't ever BEAT my child.:thumbup

I was spanked as a child. My mother used a paddle and I don't remember being frightened of her. My dad, on the other hand, had a bad anger control problem and would chase me down and beat me unexpectedly. He'd be making coffee, I'd make a joke I had made before and he would suddenly be running me down the stairs and waling on me. Yeah, that was a problem.

I was very physically scared of my father. I have never spanked my stepson and I don't think Joe or his mother ever did, either.

I think it depends on the circumstances.
