Do you have to participate in sexual activity to be considered gay or straight?

It's an analogy. So there are similarities and differences. My point is sex and eating are actions and sexual orientation and hunger are natural desires. Not acting on a natural desire doesn't make it go away. If someone starved to death it would be silly to suggest he wasn't hungry. If a man suppressed his desire to have sex with another man his whole life it would be silly to suggest he wasn't gay.
I know it was an analogy. Not one I would have used. :)

..... but now that you have elaborated.... I like it.

I would think that any man or woman who suppresses this desire to be with the same sex.... would surely not know their own truth until they did step outside themselves with another of the same sex. Why should anyone else be able to label them?

This is like my mum, when i told her she told me to leave,so i went to my grans and i live there now,i don't think me and my mum will ever be the same, like before i told her.

And that's why I'm afraid to tell my parents I'm even bisexual.

But to the question at hand, no I don't think you need to participate in sexual activity to be considered a certain sexual orientation. You have an attraction to a certain sex (or sexes in some cases) long before there's any sexual activity going on. Just my opinion.
