I'm a shift supervisor for our local 911 center. I love my job but some days I would love to go back to not being a supervisor. I don't mind the responsibility...I just don't like having to handle the write-ups and stuff like that. I've been suspended before and I know how bad it sucks...I hate taking money out of someone's pocket, even if it IS punishment for something they did wrong.

im a cable/internet/telephone contractor for charter communications. it's really a love/hate relationship. it's aaaaaall about customer service now...like 200% more than it used to be, so that part really sucks, but i like that i'm not limited to an hourly wage and can work things how i want them done.
Alright, for the most part I dont like my job, but I am very proud of what I do. Not all of the pro's or con's are directly about the Army, some of them only are for my unit
Pros with consequences
Free place to live (But they go through your place as they please, its like the cops having a search warrant for your room every day)
Free food (But it sucks)
Free healthcare (But they try and save money, and they are very rude..but they take care of you)
Family like cohesion (Has the downsides of a family)
Pros
Good training
Great experience
Dont pay sales tax on base
Liquor and Beer available 24/7
The uniform and the fact your soldier makes getting girls alot easier..
Theres never an escuse to drive home drunk because someone will always get you
Your dependents get world class care the same day they report being ill/injured for free (But you dont)
They take awesome care of your family
Family emergencies you get home that minuite, no questions asked. Families first.
GI Bill, free college
All soldiers take care of one another
Cons
Normal workday is usally 12+ hours
PT every morning, rain, shine, sleet or snow
Purposely doing meaningless things to prove a point
Deleberately not allowing us to be comfortable (No jackets when its 20 degrees, making us wear shorts in 20 degree weather)
Plenty of Equal Oppertunity Violations
Losing your weekends for meaningless things and not getting them back
You normally get stationed very far from home and cant go home often
You Deploy/ goto war
We dont get paid much
One guy fucks up we all pay
Punishments are very swift and harsh (Field grade article 15 etc..)
You pay for alot of equipment your supposed to have out of your own pocket and wont get re-imbursed (by the end of your 4 years you would have spent over 1,000)
Raiding of your person things as they please without reason (Your car, off-post storage locket etc..)
Very high suicide rate
Sexual Assault is high
Drug/Alchohol abuse is high
Most people leave with Psychological Issues (PTSD) and other medical issues (Musculoskelatal)
Your friends might die
You can die
Due to deployments most Army marriages fail
Due to deployments there is limited family contact
All in all though, its very shitty on certain days but there are also other days that are Good. The Army is an excellent career and has great experience and oppertunity. I Excell at everything I do in the Army but because my mom is terminally ill and I need togo to college I will not Re-enlist.

I work in Spain as storage and backup network administrator for an American company. Actually it’s one of the biggest technology companies in the world.
I work 40 hours a week, 8x5, and there is a good work environment. Salary is good (always can be better). Company has a formation plan very interesting and you can get certified in a lot of new technologies.
On the other hand, we usually work for customers, whom we give services over their technologies, and my current client y very stupid and bored, so I waste my time with bureaucracy rather than technical things
Also, my profile is much better paid, with less responsabilites I have in countries like UK, France, Germany,US, coming up to two times my actual salary.

Or, to be fair, I don't really hate my job, I just hate my immediate boss. The job actually suits me very well - administration work in a small office environment, the other staff are lovely, not too pressurised.
My boss, however.... he's condescending, and patronising, and obviously insecure about his own image and presence in the company because he'll tear any one of us down to make himself feel better. He made me travel to London, a two hour trip including the underground, a couple of days ago just so he could tell me that I'm not positive enough or commercially driven. You know why I've not been very upbeat the last week? Because my partner got laid off and I don't know how we're going to make rent.
Because of him, I'm thinking about looking for a new job 6 months earlier than I intended.

Very interesting post. I've read it fully, and I can say how different is the perception that people from a country has about his Army.
In Spain, we see Army as something very far, not connected to people, and a waste of money, more even now with the global crisis.
Soldiers are not as apreciated as in your country, their salaries are low. I think that one important fact for this mistrust is that Franco's dictatorship is still recent (30 years ago), and it was based in a hard police and militar represion. So people is still reluctant to the Army.

I like my job for the most part. Feel very fortunate in this economy. I just don't have enough to do and lately we have a new phone system that is f*cked up and has been causing me nothing but grief. All and all I can't complain. People I work with are very nice and I have a lot of autonomy, luv flex-time.

...and i love doing even the minutest/simplest care i can provide for my patients. It gives me so much satisfaction in life seeing them smile.
Pros with current position:
: I receive $1,500 contribution from my employer every month towards my retirement (beats any 401K/retirement matching)
: free medical insurance for life (with coverage for my child(ren) till age 21 and my partner)
: highest nursing level of salary compared to any institution in any private, county, university hospitals (even comparing with other states and with same cost of living like Chicago suburb with California weather living)
: despite climbing unemployment rates in other professions, hospitals are always in dire need of us.
: If i wanna advance in my career, I'll be able to work with the 20:20 program where i work 20 hours and 20 hours class/week yet be paid 40 hours total.
....the only thing i dislike with my government position is the fact that having been in the work force for many years and having to compare inside job politics, State job has so far the worst, from experience. There is way too much 'kiss ups' to be able to have a higher position. I don't believe in that method. I believe in providing the best care for my patients and growing in my profession through good quality of work and dedication. I am stubborn in that sense.

we pray before meetings and before luncheons and there is a nice rich ambience at my job
but sadly I have to make a change and get closer to where my son lives

I am a neonatal nurse. I love my job but as with most things there are good and bad days.
On good days, I look after non-demanding families which make me more inclined to bend over backwards to help them, as they do not demand all my attention for the whole of my shift. I make a difference, if only a small one, to families which make their day and feel their baby is making progress. I go home feeling good about my day and postive about myself as a nurse and my capabilities. Unsocial hours and public holidays we get paid more for. And with days off I can take a week of annual leave and get 2 weeks off work. (working Mon-Wed one week, a week of annual leave then working fri-Sun the following week).
On bad days, numerous admissions which take up time which then means I have less time to spend with each family (I typically look after 3 babies on a shift), demanding families who want me to do everything for them even although I am aware they can do it perfectly well themselves or know where to find what they are looking for. Working with lazy staff, babies get more sick so need a lot of procedures done = time consuming. 12.5 hour days and a lot of unsocial hours which means missing out on occasions from time to time. I wash my hands so often that they become red raw and broken down which aches.
All in all, the good days happen way more often than the bad and because no two days are the same, I love it. Could not be doing with sitting at a computer 9-5, think I would go insane!

Im a computer wiz dont like to catagorey myself because once I get a job and the realize I know tons of stuff I end up doing many jobs all rolled in into the same tiny title paycheck
