This isn't a question of whether or not you believe in God, nor is it a question if you believe in organized religion, so please don't turn it into that.

lol

I know where this came from. As I said, I believe in the Bible. But I also believe there are so many holes and contradictions between the books.

There's also some pretty fucked up shit in the bible. I forget who the story took place for, but it was the one guy who was really religious, so the Devil made a bet to God. "if you didn't give him so much, he wouldn't worship you" basically... So God killed his entire family, all his crops, burnt his house down, etc. and he still prayed to God.

That's fucked up.

I'm not a religious person, mostly because of all the differing religions and such. People belive what they we're told by their parent's parents... well not me.

That was Job. And no, I really don't believe in the Bible, and here's one reason why not. Have you ever played the game where 5 people line up, you whisper something in the 1st persons ear, and they're supposed to repeat it to the next person, and so on. Well, always by the time it gets to the last person, the story is all fucked up. The Bible wasn't written as these events happened, the stories were passed from person to person for thousands of years. How fucked up could all these stories have gotten???

I do. Good stuff in there. :banana

There are different versions, and I'm sure some things have changed over the years, but if you read from version to version, the end result is still the same knowledge.

What I don't get are people who hate religious people? Being nice to people, and trying to do the right thing is just too obnoxious eh? :dunno

Do you believe in the Bible?

are you talking about old or new testament? if the old, only the 5 main books or all the others as well? if the new, just the main books ?

one comment on that joe, regarding beleving what parents parents etc.. tell you. at least as far as judaism goes, one the main 'tenets' or whatever you call it, is in fact that because the knowledge comes from generations, passed down, there is more reason to beleve it is true. and i dont mean just basic lessons (since one can always say that things can get altered as time goes on) but for example, on passover (one of the jewish holidays) there is a traditaion to recount certain selected items from history and what not, and the book the passover stories comes from (called the haggadah if anyone cares :) ) is pretty unchanged for hundreds of years if not longer (the reason i say this is becasue they have found artifacts of old manuscripts of this stuff in several different languages that are all pretty much the same).

and there are more examples like this, but the idea in general is that if you make sure you tell your children, about the bible in this case, and you make sure you tell it right (which is why in judiasm again, there are books for this - its not just like you ad lib stuff and hope the children figure it out)
then there is actually more reason to listen to your parents.

and im sure in other religions ( at least the major ones - i cant speak for all religions) like islam and christianity there are similar ideas as well.

"Do you believe in the Bible?"

I believe the stories to be ultimately untrue, but the reason and moral of the story to be infinitely more important than whether or not the story ever actually took place.

good answer. But to be a faithful christian, you must first put 100% of your trust into the bible. I guess that's what I was getting at.

yea ^^ i dont like that

dont like what, if you dont believein teh stuff, then you dont believe in christianity (or any other religion if you have different book, for that matter)
if you take religion, and subtract all the stories and beliefs, then what you end up with is morality, give or take...which is definitley a good thing, but its not religion.

kinda like what i said inb the post above - if you believe in the morals and whatnot, while that is a great thing, if you dont accept the other stuff, its not religion anymore. religion is a lot more than a set of morals. but again, morals are a great thing so im not knocking your opinion at all

I don't beleive in the Bible or in God, you could call me an Atheist...

I have alot of views on why not to beleive in the Bible.. One is that, if God chooses paths for everyone, why does he give people paths to commit murder etc, condemning them to hell? Obviously God doesn't love all his people...

not exactly. i dont like that you have to believe it first, then its true

then there is the story of how baby moses survived the pharoh's killing of all baby males... i dont like that either.

too many inconsistencies :dunno

if you really want to know the answer (or answers) to that question, there are books upon books written just about that. but anyway, who says paths are chosen for everyone? why do you make that assumption?
