How do you handle a difference of opinion? I'm not talking something minor like.... that's green... and someone says no... it's ivy. I'm talking about a topic that can get really personal. Examples:

Religion.
Sexual Preference.
Money.
Government.

You know.... the heart of things.

What do you do when your beliefs are being questioned or attacked? Do you take a stand and argue until you're blue in the face? Do you 'man up' and realize it's only gonna get uglier if you pursue the conversation and take the high road and back off?

Does anyone who offers their opinion on anything really need to shove it down the throats of others? Does anyone who doesn't agree with another's opinions need to keep at them until both are beside themselves with anger?

What does any of it prove?

Whatever happened to being able to agree to disagree? Civility?

Your thoughts?

There is four things I try not to talk about with friends/strangers/coworkers/clients.

Goverment
Religion/beliefs
Sexual preference/views on gays/lesbians
Abortion

I tend to not want to know their views on such topics because it tends to ruin my opinion of them. They aren't nice discussion topics.

I want nothing to do with people having radically opposed views from mine -in other words, flawed views- on matters such as religion, belief, sexual preference/sexual liberties or liberties and politics.

Those are debate topics which are meant for discussion. There's going to be a difference of opinion on anything having to do with these subjects. I try to answer politely with my opinion and back it up but if starts to get ugly where I am attacked I back the hell out and usually unsubscribe and never look back.

Reddy Red Ryder stoking the fire;)

Aha! I am not stoking the fire as you say.

I'm generating a thread to give all a thought provoking pause to consider how they really feel and how they really act.

No harm in that as far as I can see. :)

.... unless one reads more into it than it was meant to be. That seems to happen at times.

Regarding the bolded text above, that does not ring true imo. This is a debate forum, 'manning up' does not equate to backing off. Debate your point until you get tired of debating. It's that simple. And this has nothing to do with getting ugly. I consistently have never-ending debates and it is done mostly while remaining civil or maybe just a little sarcasm enters the discussion. ;)

Recently I have been involved in discussion on this board with just 1 individual who is unable to handle disagreement on a civil level. I'll leave him up to you moderators to deal with. The important thing here is that he is the exception, not the norm. Most of us can handle debate and disagreement while remaining mostly civil. ;)

Now those are fun debates to watch.

I have been known to get a little hot under the collar in debate, I'll admit and in the future, I'll try harder to keep my cool. Name calling really pisses me off though.....grrrrr....lol

I think threads like this are genious.....it's a great way to get matters that tend to get swept under the rug, out in the open and settled once and for all.

I rarely find myself in a debate. I'm pretty level headed.... so I don't lose control of the situation... I'll usually just mosey on out and find something else to do. :)

.... but seriously..... whatever it is that I thought this thread might accomplish.... I doubt it will settle anything once and for all. There's always gonna be a new person or six discussing something or other and well..... it is what it is.

I suspect 'civility' is only available to those who think there is nothing of worth to obtain.....and they scare the hell out of me :eek

Ok the injun is starting to come out of me... in a good way... for now at least so shove on over girls and let me squish inbetwixe you.... That's better... now squish in close cuz I'ma no wanna repeat myself.

The thing that I've noticed and makes me wery wery cwanky is when something is misunderstood and no matter what a person says they can't convince someone that it was misunderstood. To make maters worse when you axe 'em to go back and re-read the fucking post they couldn't be bothered. Make sense that I get cwanky?

Now that I got that of my chest and speakin' of injuns ... um... you ever have any injun in ya? :D
