Severe isn't a layman's term for major. IJS.

I think she just meant it...as a non-diagnosis...word lol?? :willy_nilly:
The DSM doesn't technically list a severe depression, only Major Depressive Disorder, but that's far too nitpicky.
He may have decided your depression was severe but not persistent enough to MDD, so severe it is classified.

Clinical depression is a chemical reaction in the brain, I am not disputing that. What I am stating is that for most common every day depression just forcing yourself to be cool and calm really works! For the most part, a lot of people who claim they are depressed aren't depressed at all, they are just genetically crazy! Depression can be used as a crutch just like asthma.

:homo: Thanks Pan :D

Didn't wanna go that route to explain re: diagnosing as that's quite complicated. As when someone is diagnosed with MDD there are pre- qualifiers. When ur MD maybe have said severe, just as Pan had explained. As MDD diagnosis depends on length of time one had been suffering, severity, coping skills, occurrence in a year/ lifetime etc etc. I didn't mean it the way you understood it Darrell. ;)

It's all in delivery, and rather than come across as a KNOW IT ALL, she could have asked me to clarify. Not tried to make it sound as if I didn't know what I was talking about.

Oh my apologies Sir. I do understand its all in delivery. Having been joking around with you and had just been doing pm with you b4 my reply here ( which you seemed to be in high spirits and not sensitive about this) etc. And you knowing English is not my first language that I have difficulty at times expressing what I needed to point out, you're the last person i think who would think that :(

I wasn't trying to be the KNOW IT ALL. Never been. I dont know a lot of things. I learn everyday. I learn from my tansactions with you and others. Since i thought I was just asking/ clarifying and not mentioned anything to offend u or anyone. My bad.

what do u all think about it.

ive suffered from it for a long time...and not the kind where im sad cuz i cant buy shit and have everything i want. mine is more involved with people and choices i've made.

I suffer too. I find more and more people do.

Life is very difficult at times and everything revolves around money, and I am sure this is what causes more depression then anything else

Money is so directly correlated with mental health; when the economy goes down, suicide rates go way up. Horrifying.

Great point you make there. I think a lot of it shows how society has changed over the years. Mental illness is no longer taboo.... People are encouraged to talk about it now. Even as few as 20 years ago, depression was swept under the carpet and people couldn't talk about it, so you found fewer people did, so it seems as though it is more common in todays world. I don't think this is the case. I think its just that more people will admit to it.

I do feel (especially in England, I don't know about the rest of the world) that doctors are too quick to diagnose depression now though, and not just a case of the "blues". I think true depression and the "blues" are completely different.

Yeah, it is such a shame.
Life is very hard nowadays. And alot of people find it hard to handle, which results in depression that gets out of hand. It is a very sad state to get into, but something that is not helped. Very annoying when people say, "well, sort yourself out, and get out more"

How would you explain successful millionaires who suffer from depression then? The snooker player Ronnie O'Sullivan instantly springs to mind.

The correlation has a bell shaped distribution. In the US, it is estimated that 60-70k of annual income per adult is the best predictor of self-reported happiness.

Basically, poverty comes with its challenges and extreme wealth comes with its challenges as well. This is mostly due to uncertainty. The impoverished are always waiting for the end of the line, and the wealthy are usually taking financial risks in order to build their wealth and it's a gamble which can cause stress.

Plus, anyone at all can have a chemical imbalance leading to depression; it would be evident throughout their life. Suicide rates increasing due to the economy collapsing involves cases of extreme circumstantial depression. A millionaire who takes his own life may not have ever really felt depressed before, but feel so boxed in a corner financially (it affects every facet of their identity) they have no "choice" but to die.
