The most beautiful sky I ever saw was when I was stationed in southern England, driving down a curvey B-road (are there C-roads? This was practically a path) in the country. I stopped because it was pitch-black out. I got out and sat on my car & waited for my eyes to adjust. The winter stars were so bright, and so many! The next night I brought my beloved to see. We felt blessed.

This is proof to me that light pollution isn't a real problem. Southern England is one of the most densely populated areas in the world, but a little journey off the beaten path, and you can see the sky fine still.

I've made my mind up, if you want to stargaze, go somewhere remote. Lighting is incredibley important to safety, both personal and road, in urban areas.

Head north young man! California is an awesome state. They have kept much of the Pacific coast pristine. Saw some awesome night skys at Goat Rock summer before last. Amazing night skies on the northern coast. Don't have any night shots, but you can imagine what it is like from these - Check out these happy California cows:

I agree  Even @ the San Diego coast (La Jolla and shores near Cabrillo National monument) it's beautiful out there and night skies are spectacular. Desert night skies in Joshua Tree and Death Valley are beautiful too.

I know what you mean. I took a solo ride up around Big Sur a few years ago. North up the coast, south through Central Ca. Camped along the Kern river that trip.

Nice shots you have here of Big Sur  I heard and seen pics that during winter solstice, night skies are a beauty.

check these pics out from a photographer who does pics of the California coast: (Monterey and Big Sur) 1st pic is in Death Valley.

The thing about light polution is that if we all agreed to lower the amount of light at night, the polution would go away right away. Other forms of polution, on the other hand...
