Exactly!!!!!!!!! What's the freaking problem w/that?
I've never understood it either. I told a very religious friend I wanted to minor in anthropology and concentrate in paleoanthropology so I could study pre-human primates. Based on the look on her face, she was trying to get God to strike me down at that very moment.
You know, I have no problem w/people like that believing what they want to believe. This is America after all. But when they start trying to dictate what MY kid learns I get a huge attitude.....
If you don't want your kid to learn about Evolution, do what they do for SexEd. Opt them out. They can go sit in the library for the class....
Just don't expect to grow up and think you are going to compete w/other grown kids on the world stage for those higher-paying jobs. Our education system sucks compared to most of the rest of the industrialized world. :willy_nilly: Gee, I wonder why?
God put them there to "test" people or something like that. I should have asked her about it, though. I think she would have died if she found out I believe in evolution and dinosaurs.
I like the opting out idea. Of course, when it pops up on the FCAT, the parents would flip out.
There ya go! I have nothing against people believing either, but that should not interfere with what is taught to my children or not having it taught at all.
I remember when I was in school it was required to split the time between evolution, creation and space aliens... I kid you not. We were given the theories on all three versions. I chose to believe in option #1

I learned about Space Aliens too. In high school. In Civics class no less.. Our teacher was a "Chariots of the Gods" buff....
Tho, I only learned about Creationism when I attended Christian school for a couple of years. Before and after that in elementary public schools, it was Evolution that was the accepted science.
Tho, in High school, Evolution was in Science class and Creationism was in Comparative Religion class...

I'm stunned that he would teach about space aliens. Maybe in the context of discussing urban legends and such, ok...but not as the origin of man. I remember that book.
I can go with a discussion of creationism in Comparative Religion, but not science. It goes against scientific principles. That of using evidence to substantiate a conclusion.

Well, there are the theories out there that we were indeed seeded from other planets.
As we don't know anything for absolute sure, I try to keep an open mind about most everything in regards to this subject.
I figure when I die, then I'll know the rest of the story....:cool
So, the religiously controlled entertainment media deciding for the population what can and cannot be seen? Just more proof that the majority of Americans are still in the intellectual Dark Ages, dominated by a fire-and-brimstone fear propagated by Fanatical religious leaders to control the masses through ignorance, suspicion and fear? When it comes to logic, science and a sense of tolerance for alternate views is America one of the most backward nations on Earth?
No don't be completely ridiculous. America is actually the leader in scientific innovation if you check your facts. A tiny minority of Americans decided this, not all Americans.
"ridiculous"? You fail to understand my rhetorical questions. You failed to address my questions in a knee-jerk defense of a critique of your nation. It is true that a significant percentage of Americans challenge the validity of many scientific theories, including evolution and cosmology. It is the tiny minority of Americans that have risen above this ignorance and produced the scientific and technological marvels your nation is to be revered for, not the dismal censorship by religious tyrants. I have seen many a poll conducted both by the media and in online forums on cosmology and evolution and the yeahs and nays are almost evenly divided.
By the way, my post was rhetorical. It was a series of questions intended to make one think, not react.
When it comes to free thinking and tolerance I can only think that in the land of freedom of speech it is a wonder why so many literary classics are banned material. Read the titles in this list and explain to me why they are frowned upon. I read many of them in high school (and remember that this is just the top 100.
