I had wanted to get it just in case a situation like this one arose. :24: I'm going to get one now, but I know that once I have it, something like this won't actually ever happen again.

I hear ya! I hurried up and got mine.. (company DID pay for it) and we have not gone to Canada yet and sure as hell won't now since it's getting cold again...

At least with a good old-fashioned stabbing, you feel like you're getting a more personal service.

Do fewer people have up-to-date passports in America because you've got so many places to go within your own country? In England it's unusual not to have a passport - I carry mine in my purse, both for using as ID and in case I get a sudden urge to make a break for Japan.

Yeah.. I think this is the main thing... as a country, the USA is SOOO large.. I have to drive more than a day in all directions to get close to leaving the country... many people never do... I think it's mainly a geography thing...

Yeah, I've just never really had a reason to have one... the only times I've left the country were to go to Mexico, back before that required a passport. I almost got one about 5 years ago when my ex and I were going to go on a cruise, but then she got pregnant and we obviously decided against that. It would take me about 6 hours to go to Mexico, and 20ish hours to Canada. But a huge chunk of Americans would have to travel at least a day to get to a place to get out of the country... except by plane, but that's fairly expensive if you're going anywhere but Mexico or Canada.

Many Americans cannot afford to travel abroad - My SWAG estimate (Scientific Wild Ass Guess) is probably 1/3 can't afford it, another 1/3 have no intention to travel abroad for a myriad of reasons.

About one third of Americans maintain a valid passport. Most of those are probably for Carribean, Canadian and Latin America travel, cruises and such.

Oh wait, I was wrong. It's $165 for the book and card, $135 for just the book, and $55 for the card. Then for renewals it's now $140 for the book and card, $110 for the book, and $30 for the card.

Out of curiosity what this card thing all about. For 87 clams we get a passport book... no cards... no gimmicks... just a book that is good all over the world.

It lets you travel to Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean... it basically gives people an option to spend a lot less money if they only plan on traveling in North America/Caribbean. I think there's a similar thing in Europe for travel between the EU nations.

btw Toots ours will soon be over 200 clams. We're switching to some sort of new fancy state of the art shit hence the increase.

I think that's why the cos of ours went up... cause I know when I was going to get mine 5 years ago or whatever, it was only gonna cost us about $200 for two of 'em.

The card lets you go to Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean... you have to have the book to go anywhere else. So people that don't play on leaving the North America area can just get a card and pay a very discounted fee.

Don't answer my previous question because you have here. Your card would be akin to our advanced drivers license as far as what countries we can access via foot automobile. What we can't do with it though is board a flight in your country or travel on a cruise ship from / to a US point. For that we need a passport.

psst... it's warmer here in the winter than where you are. BC is a great place in the winter provided you ain't made of sugar.

There are some discussions to make travel a little bit easier for travel between our two countries... like the NEXUS Card
