I had to turn down a free trip to London to "chaperone" my 16 year old cousin so she could meet her favorite author... why did I have to turn it down? Oh right, cause I don't have a fucking passport. I have a filled out passport application, but haven't had the extra $170 laying around to get it. Speaking of $170, it's ridiculous that it costs that much money to get a stupid little booklet approved, made, and shipped.

Gah!

Wow, that is a lot. Mine was $75 two years ago, but they wanted more for the card that JUST allows me to go to Canada...I'm like...more money, and I can't go anywhere else? Great deal.

That sucks though.

Are you sure that's right Nic? I just renewed mine in March of last year and it was only like $75 or so like Carly said.. and I got JUST the passport and not the card...

A new passport is $170, and it takes 2-6 weeks... the card is an additional $30 on top of that if you want it. Then a renewal is $75. You can evidently pay these services obscene amounts of money to get them in as fast as 48 hours too. :24:

Oh wait, I was wrong. It's $165 for the book and card, $135 for just the book, and $55 for the card. Then for renewals it's now $140 for the book and card, $110 for the book, and $30 for the card.

That might be the worst thing I've heard all day, I'd be scrambling for that passport money.

Well, it was this weekend... so unless I find a way to raise $500 to have an 48 hour turnaround, it wouldn't work. Oh well. I feel bad for her though, her mom is loaded from different inheritances and such (she and my uncle are divorced), and her mom told her she'd take her like 3 weeks ago. Then she forgot and never took the time off of work, and then refused to take the time off last minute. Then told her that she had to find a family member who would be willing to go with her, and she'd pay for it all. Unfortunately, my grandma is busy, her dad and dad's girlfriend both have to work and couldn't take time off, her brother is in school, my sister is in school, another cousin is in the Navy and couldn't take off on that short notice, and I don't have my passport. She's not really close with any of our other relatives (come to think of it, neither am I :24:), so they were all pretty much out of the question. So her once in a lifetime opportunity (and mine for that matter) went away partially because I never got around to getting my passport like I wanted to over the summer.

Would her mom be willing to help you out with passport costs so her daughter could go on this trip, since she did drop the ball?

What's the significance of the card? Here we just get a book.

The card lets you go to Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean... you have to have the book to go anywhere else. So people that don't play on leaving the North America area can just get a card and pay a very discounted fee.

It actually looks like it's too late for that now, I would've had to have started the process yesterday to have it by Wednesday... because she's evidently going to be in London on Thursday. Oh well, that's just life.

That blows bro! You can't beat yourself up for her lack of planning though. Most people don't have a passport just in case they need to go somewhere. Usually it's for a specific purpose. I renewed mine since my boss has been planning to send me to Canada for some things, but it has just never happened. Combine that with the possibility of going to India, Europe or Japan at any time...

I had wanted to get it just in case a situation like this one arose. :24: I'm going to get one now, but I know that once I have it, something like this won't actually ever happen again.
