Moved to Persist

Ask God to help you persist in prayer.

REFLECT
Think of the most persistent person you know.

Two things are likely true of this person: they’re annoying at times, and their persistence pays off. If you were to apply this kind of persistence to your prayer life, what would change about how or when you pray?

Jesus tells the story of a persistent widow who annoys an apathetic judge so much that he eventually gives her the justice she seeks. Jesus told this story "to show them [his followers] that they should always pray and not give up."

We often think of prayer as a passive spiritual act, but it’s not. Prayer is the most aggressive move we make to experience God and invite his kingdom to manifest in the world. Even when it appears all hope is lost and nothing will change, we should always pray and never lose heart.

RESPOND
Make an aggressive move to incorporate prayer into the next 24 hours. Don’t allow the busyness of your schedule to keep you from experiencing God today.

A Dangerous Move

Take a moment to pray: "God, please help me to move in spite of my fear."

REFLECT
Honestly, it seems like a small step, right? Just go in and see the king. Not a big deal if you’re the queen. Except it was. It was a step that could get Esther killed. By going in to see the king uninvited--even though she was the queen--her life was literally at risk.

We may not face decisions today that look like actual suicide. But what about decisions that are social suicide? (Why would you be friends with her?) Career suicide? (You’re going to say that to the boss?)

These kind of decisions come around much more often. The question is whether we’re willing to make the same move that Esther did--to take the risk in spite of our fear and regardless of the outcome.

RESPOND
Take a few minutes and think through the rest of your day. Is there anywhere that God may want you to make a decision like Esther’s? Ask Him for the courage to move in those moments when you’re fearful.

Make no mistake about it: Daniel knew exactly what was going down. You don’t spend a lifetime in politics without learning who your enemies are and what everyone is planning. When Daniel saw this law, he knew it was geared at one person. Him.

And he had a choice to make. He very easily could have stopped praying, or hidden it away, or even simply changed his daily routine. After all, he was so predictable that even his enemies knew what time of day they could catch him in the act. Yet he didn’t. He moved forward into a choice that could have cost him his life, trusting that God would be with him, regardless.

RESPOND
Often it isn’t the big moments where we lose our courage. It is the small ones--the temptation to cut short a prayer, to join in on a joke, to listen to the latest gossip. Take a few minutes and ask God to show you one small area where he wants you to be courageous and stand for him today.
