Where is the soul?

I think that it is funny because most atheists adopt a scientific viewpoint based on observable data & there is absolutely no scientific evidence for the existence of a soul. It still seems to me to be a belief of faith, one in which you hope you have a soul.

I cannot explain the phenomena that we call ghosts, possibly even having seen one myself, but I do not believe in anything supernatural & a soul would fit in that category. It may be that an explanation is near at hand - remember that it wasn't until the 1990's that we could fully explain the so called supernatural phenomena such as Ball Lightning & Spontaneous Human Combustion (not very spontaneous, actually)

Allan

Actually the Atheists I've had talks with don't believe in the soul. They believe when you die it's all over. However I see no reason why a soul has to equal God such as the Christian God. You could have one without the other.

I did not think Ball Lightning or SHC was ever considered supernatural.

Could we be God? Fuck that shit, I have enough trouble just being a good husband, family member and friend!:willy_nilly:

Pete, don't trouble your self with the concept. BTW it does not require you to do anything different. ;)

How old are you?

For many years both of these were put in the same bin as witchcraft & lycanthropy. It was hard to believe all the witnesses that saw a ball of light appear inside their plane & travel down the aisle only to exit the rear of the plane. Most put this in with UFO stories, until it was shown that plasma balls could be made & maintained in the right conditions.

The first episodes of SHC spoke more about the fact that the person was in a locked room & that there seemed to be no ignition source, so therefore under the right conditions a human could just suddenly burst into flames & then slowly burn away leaving nearly everything else untouched.

They sound supernatural when you look at them like that, but eventually both were solved - It makes me wonder how many more of these supernatural stories may at some time be explained in scientific terms. Just to press the point look at the new controllers that read a persons thought pattern & then controls something like a PC or robotic arm - does this not sound like ESP?

Ever since I've been aware of these occurrences, they were not described as supernatural events, just mysteries. I first heard of ball lightning in the 70's and SHC in the 80's. I overlooked your 1900's comment and I can see at one point how they might have been considered supernatural. And I agree, there is no proof that souls exist. I'm just saying that to have a soul you don't need to have a Christian God. :)

-- Cardinal Bellarmine, during the trial of Galileo, 1615

That reminds me of the mock witch trial I attended in Salem, Ma. Does she weigh less than a duck? (monty python). Some scary stuff there. :)

Cool!

I tend to disagree with you on the soul thing being non religious (actually on a re-read you said non christian but I think that my point still stands). There seems to me to be no other purpose for the invention of a soul other than religion. Without a soul you can't have any form of afterlife, reincarnation nor is there any way to exert control over you in this world (the hell & fire for eternity philosophy). All religions need a soul or their philosophies are a waste of time.

I can't think of a single reason why an atheist would believe that we have a soul. Glad to hear one though, always open to new ideas - still it would take a lot to convince me that we have a soul.

Honestly I don't know if we have souls or not, only guesses and wishful thinking. I mean having a spirit that continues on would be cool, better than oblivion upon physical death, right?:thumbup

Years ago a university did a study with psychics. They had a women whose son had committed suicide. 3 psychics knew nothing about this lady. They went in and all of them zeroed right in by claiming to communicate with her son and other relatives who had passed away. One guy even said he saw a dog spirit (the ladies dog has died 6 months prior.)

When I watched this there were two possible conclusions 1) it was real and these psychics were talking to spirits or 2) it was a setup for entertainment.

I tend to believe it was real but ultimately I'm at the mercy of the people who did this study. I'd have to conduct my own study to be 100% convinced.

I think he is implying that if we are made in God's image, then he did not do such a good job of instilling us with good values. However, I realize that we are endowed with choice and it is up to us to be moral or not.
