Congresswoman shot

Totally untrue. Both sides use exactly the same rhetoric.

No there are very few instances of aggressive rhetoric coming from the dems. Yet hate is the central theme coming from the Republicans.

“If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun,” Obama said <= that's a link. Why don't links look different in OTZ??

Keith Olberman, the left-wing version of O'Reilly/Beck, has a regular feature called Worst Person in the World.

Political campaigns are routinely referred to with warfare vernacular. Hell, they're called campaigns, for chrissakes.

That was a very famous quote from the Untouchables that Obama used. A long leap from politicians in crosshairs.

And that's pretty much the only instance I can think of.

"Violence is coming" - Glenn Beck

"You need to riot"

Worst person in the World? :24: yeah, that's exactly the same as O'Reilly saying "Tiller the baby Killer" etc etc etc...

When have the dems ever used anything like the Obama = Hitler rhetoric that the republicans have done?

this is what happens when you demonise the opposition to the extent that the right has done the left in the US:

Took me :30 seconds to find this list from Obama himself.

** Obama: “They Bring a Knife…We Bring a Gun”
** Obama to His Followers: “Get in Their Faces!”
** Obama on ACORN Mobs: “I don’t want to quell anger. I think people are right to be angry! I’m angry!”
** Obama to His Mercenary Army: “Hit Back Twice As Hard”
** Obama on the private sector: “We talk to these folks… so I know whose ass to kick.
** Obama to voters: Republican victory would mean “hand to hand combat
** Obama to Latino supporters: “Punish your enemies.”
** Obama to democrats: “I’m itching for a fight.”

Here's a few more to occupy your time:

"A spoiled child (Bush) is telling us our Social Security isn't safe anymore, so he is going to fix it for us. Well, here's your answer, you ungrateful whelp: [audio sound of 4 gunshots being fired.] Just try it, you little b*stard. [audio of gun being cocked]." -- A "humor bit" from the Randi Rhodes Show
"I want to go up to the closest white person and say: 'You can't understand this, it's a black thing' and then slap him, just for my mental health" -- New York city councilman Charles Barron
"..And then there's Rumsfeld who said of Iraq 'We have our good days and our bad days.' We should put this S.O.B. up against a wall and say 'This is one of our bad days' and pull the trigger." -- From a fundraising ad put out by the St. Petersburg Democratic Club
"I believe in ecoterrorism." -- James Cameron
"...In an ideal world, American consumers could be convinced to do the right thing through an appeal to logic with public service messages like the 'What Would Jesus Drive?' TV campaign, but the kind of people who would buy a car that increases the risk to other motorists in an accident can't be reasoned with. They're selfish and stupid. It's unfortunate that drivers must worry that their SUVs are being targeted by insulting stickers and Molotov cocktails, but one thing's for sure: It couldn't be happening to a more deserving group of people." -- Ted Rall winks at ecoterrorism
"F*** God D*mned Joe the God D*mned Motherf*cking plumber! I want Motherf*cking Joe the plumber dead." -- Liberal talk show host Charles Karel Bouley on the air.
"Republicans don't believe in the imagination, partly because so few of them have one, but mostly because it gets in the way of their chosen work, which is to destroy the human race and the planet. Human beings, who have imaginations, can see a recipe for disaster in the making; Republicans, whose goal in life is to profit from disaster and who don't give a hoot about human beings, either can't or won't. Which is why I personally think they should be exterminated before they cause any more harm." -- The Village Voice's Michael Feingold, in a theater review of all places
(Rush Limbaugh)" just wants the country to fail. To me that's treason. He's not saying anything different than what Osama Bin Laden is saying. You might want to look into this, sir, because I think Rush Limbaugh was the 20th hijacker but he was just so strung out on Oxycontin he missed his flight. ... Rush Limbaugh, I hope the country fails, I hope his kidneys fail, how about that?" -- Wanda Sykes
"You guys see Live and Let Die, the great Bond film with Yaphet Kotto as the bad guy, Mr. Big? In the end they jam a big CO2 pellet in his face and he blew up. I have to tell you, Rush Limbaugh is looking more and more like Mr. Big, and at some point somebody’s going to jam a CO2 pellet into his head and he’s going to explode like a giant blimp. That day may come. Not yet. But we’ll be there to watch. I think he’s Mr. Big, I think Yaphet Kotto. Are you watching, Rush?" -- Chris Matthews
"I have zero doubt that if Dick Cheney was not in power, people wouldn't be dying needlessly tomorrow....I'm just saying if he did die, other people, more people would live. That's a fact." -- Bill Maher
"If I got (Condi Rice) a— on camera, I would put my Mars Air Jordans so far up her butt that the Mayo Clinic would have to remove them." -- Spike Lee
"O&A - 'Condoleezza Rice'"
Charlie - "I'd love to f--- that b*tch dude" (laughter)
Charlie - "She's the F---in man"
O&A - "yeah"
Charlie - "I'd F...that b*tch...."
O&A - "I just imagine the horror in Condoleezza Rice's face...."
- "(laughter) ..... as she realizes what's going on"
- "...as you were just holding her down and F'n her."
Charlie - "punch her all the F'n face, shut the F--- up b*tch"
O&A - "that's exactly what I meant" (laughter in background) Charlie - "you know F--- it .... and George Bush wife? I'd F--- that b*tch to death" -- "Shock Jocks" Opie & Anthony talk rape & violence with their guest "Homeless Charlie."
"For those of you who do, as a matter of principle, oppose war in any form, the idea of supporting a conscientious objector who's already been inducted [and] in his combat service in Iraq might have a certain appeal. But let me ask you this: Would you render the same support to someone who hadn't conscientiously objected, but rather instead rolled a grenade under their line officer in order to neutralize the combat capacity of their unit?" -- University Professor Ward Churhill on supporting soldiers who frag their officers
"Drudge? Aw, Drudge, somebody ought to wrap a strong Republican entrail around his neck and hoist him up about six feet in the air and watch him bounce." -- Liberal radio host, Mike Malloy
"I know how the 'tea party' people feel, the anger, venom and bile that many of them showed during the recent House vote on health-care reform. I know because I want to spit on them, take one of their 'Obama Plan White Slavery' signs and knock every racist and homophobic tooth out of their Cro-Magnon heads." -- The Washington Post's Courtland Milloy

And let's not forget:

"a television ad run by Democratic congressional candidate Harry Mitchell in 2006 against Republican opponent Rep. J.D. Hayworth. Mitchell’s ad featured a target symbol superimposed over grainy black-and-white video imagery of Hayworth’s face, as the narrator said Hayworth was “the focus of the Justice Department’s investigation” in the Jack Abramoff case."

Both sides have been playing the same game for a LONG time.

To even try to compare the vitriol on the left to what the right has been promoting is ridiculous.

Crazy psycho nutjobs will always be a problem. But when you throw fuel on them and light the fire like the right does every single day (just listen to Beck, Rush, Hannity, Savage or the criminal Levin) you can expect some of them to act out violently.
Actually political discussion is dead in this country. Now it's a game to be crazier than the next guy and attacking the individual instead of his policies has become the norm.

There is no comparison between the two sides.

Both sides have been playing the same game for a LONG time.

You're right, both sides have played it but the republicans perfected it. And it's the right wing nut jobs that have the heavy hitters in talk radio/tv that promote the hate each and every day. We could dedicate an entire section of the forum just to contain the hateful rhetoric spewed by these guys.

If we had a tit for tat back and forth on the hate speech, you guys would be out of material pretty quick. And like I said, we could fill a entire section with the right wing crazies.

Who is "you guys?"

I sure hope you weren't implying I'm somehow part of the right wing? I only dispute the notion that strong rhetoric is only coming from one side. Yes Hannity is an idiot and a blathering asshole. But I've also heard the exact same pit-bull level of vitriol from Olbermann, Randi Rhodes and Rachel Maddow. Both sides have caustic mouthpieces. The main difference is... the Hannity's and O'Reillys have much better ratings and much bigger audiences. And that makes me want to vomit.

Who is "you guys?"

Those who are trying to say the left is just as bad and cite examples.

And let me correct myself from my earlier post. Republicans do not = right wing nut jobs. Right wing nut jobs are just that, they are their own breed. I'll even go a step further and say that the vast majority of republicans are nothing like the fringe right wingers, it's just that they're louder and tend to overshadow the sane. It really doesn't help that the voice of the right on talk radio IS the problem.

1 right wing commentator alone trumps all of that, and in complete seriousness:

http://mediamatters.org/research/201010110015

that's just 1. Many of the list you've put there are comedians/pop stars etc. You're not going to take a humour segment seriously. And several aren't even a call to arms of any kind.

The results of right wing rhetoric can be seen in the numerous pictures I posted on the previous page.

Lots and lots more:

http://mediamatters.org/research/201101100003

There's no doubt that both sides have their extremes. But in this instance the Right are desperately trying to cover their tracks. Why so? Because, the right is traditionally the party of war, the party of gun support, the party of hard lines against it's enemies. It's an integral part of right-wing philosophy.

Right wing politics views everything in black and white. This creates extremes. The left sees the massive grey ares in between. The left is ready to compromise. The right isn't. These attitudes alone create incredible hostility.
