*bump*

All ye, all ye! come hither!

If you can answer yes to these questions - then what are you waiting for? Register your interest and let me know you'll join in!

Do you have any sort of camera? (phone, point and shoot, dslr)
Do you take pictures with it?

If so - join in the new photography league starting soon!

Basic Details

  • There'll be seven rounds
  • There'll be different themes for each round
  • You can join in at any time - the earlier you join, the better your chances of winning overall
  • Each round will last a fixed amount of time (TBD) - around 1-2 weeks, I'm leaning towards 2 weeks but may change this.

If there are any questions (which I daresay could be quite a few) not covered below, ask away.

FAQ

Q: How will points be scored?

A: The Formula 1 points scoring system will be used and if there are ever more than 10 entries in a round, each person at 10th or below will get 1 point. This is currently as follows:

Points
1st:
25
2nd:
18
3rd:
15
4th:
12
5th:
10
6th:
8
7th:
6
8th:
4
9th:
2
10th:
1

Q: Have the 'hosts' for each round been decided?

A: These are nearly in place. Existing members who have been VIP'ed will form the 'hosts' for each round.

Q: How will voting take place?

A: When the submission deadline for each round passes (determined by the hosts based on the time for each round), the host will create a poll thread in the Pictures section with each submission anonymously listed. Anyone can then vote on the pictures.

Q: How will these points be added to this 'league'?

A: When each round concludes, the host of that round will send an administrator (Natasha probably) the results of what each submission (and of course submitter) scored. The administrator will then add those scores to the 'league' thread so that anyone can see how the league is progressing as each round goes by.

Q: How do I enter?

A: Register your interest here or simply send a submission to each host (or even just for certain rounds) as they arise. The more rounds you enter - the better your chances.

Q: Does it cost to enter?

A: Yes - 2500 tokenz for each round. If you don't have enough - these will be supplied for you by a generous administrator.

Q: Will there be any prizes for winning this league?

A: YES! The entry tokenz will be used towards the cost of a prize fund. There'll be prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place overall in the league. I'll be donating some towards this fund too.

Q: Can I use old pictures if they suit a particular round?

A: Yes. It doesn't matter when they were taken as long as YOU took the photo.

just a few points that might help

each entry must be taken by the entrant

its supposed to be fun even though its a competition,so dont take it as life and death

and a one off competition can be hard work, this one is more complicated and harder due to each host running a round each, plus the fact that someone has to sort the points out.....so as many entrants as possible please, its going to be a big prize fund:thumbup

and i will be donating 25k to the prize fund

Am I too "green" to enter? :)

Also, do you still need ideas for themes? If so, I'd like to suggest: Self Portraits, Wildlife, Action Shots, Architecture

No, not too green at all :) Heck, you could even be the stereotypical 'green alien' and still enter. ;)

I do already have a lot of theme ideas already - some of those covered by your suggestions, but thank you nevertheless - I may combine a couple of categories that fit well.

That reminds me. Theme ideas will be broad - but using your imagination is key. As long as it fits and it's quite obvious it fits a category then thinking outside the box is fine. No theme will be anything that can't be done with any camera.

Don't assume that just because person X has a DSLR that they will automatically have the better shots. I won the last 'league' competition with the majority of my winners coming from point and shoot cameras rather than my DSLR.

I love taking photos - both with my Lumix and my iPhone so I'm up for it. I've got [most of] my pics up on Flickr, and watermarked - would watermarks be okay for the this? It's the one way I can prove older photos are mine.

I'm new, so still putting my feelers around the forum, so I'm not sure what it means about having to pay a fee??

Will there be rules on post-processing? I mean, on my iPhone (and subsequently Instagram) I edit a lot with filters and the like. With other pics it may just be a slight curve alteration, or sometimes an all out action to make the photo look vintage or wotnot. Or did I miss any mention of that already? :smiley24:

PP - Underneath your avatar there is a "Tokenz" listing. You can earn tokenz by posting, repping or creating threads. Tokenz are used for the Arcade games or sending PMs.

It's these tokenz that are to be used as a fee for each round. As you don't have enough, don't worry - an administrator will be sure to let you have some for each round you enter :) (they earn lots being admins etc).

Post Processing

A good thing you mentioned this. It IS allowed, but as minimal as possible. If you are not manipulating the image severely but just light processing or vintage / b & w look etc, then it's probably fine. The hosts will have the final say in each round but I daresay as long as you didn't fake a shot - e.g. stick a silhouette of something in front of a sunset picture, then it's all good.

I forgot to reply about your watermarked images. You could enter those, but... after the first round - people will know which shots are yours if all your entries are watermarked. e.g. as soon as Natasha adds your point(s) to the league, people will know and there could be bias in the next round(s). So if at all possible, try to submit pictures without. Submit smaller, coarser pictures (but not thumbnails :p) if that helps your concerns.

Of course, of course - sometimes I edit to within an inch of its life -not because the photo is bad, but because I think the filter/action/whatevs enhances the photo. Perhaps there could be a topic that includes PP? not that I'm much good at it, mine is mainly actions I've found online for PS.

I've still got originals, and would be able to enter them if needs be - it's just where we'd have to prove something is ours was what I was wondering about. I used to belong to a photog forum, and if you didn't have a DSLR you were an outcast, which was a shame, because a camera doesn't make the photographer...with of course, taking new photographs - some days I'm busier than others so if I have old photos that could be entered it takes away the stress!

Manipulations for post processing isn't against the rules, just minimal is all :) - or did you mean a discussion thread regarding post processing? If the latter - then feel free (and I encourage you!) to start such a thread in the pictures section.

Nope, not an outcast at all if you don't have a dslr - and that kind of attitude is a shame. It's unfortunate when there are elitists about. Brand elitism is another thing too of course. That sometimes but very rarely happens here and when it does, it's usually not serious and just jesting.

And yup - old photos are fine. As Sky (who has run a lot of these competitions in the past) and myself have mentioned - as long as YOU (the entrant) took the shot, that's the main thing.

No, sorry, not articulating myself properly - I was suggesting one of the themes for the league be PP of some sort :) I'm no good at starting threads :p

Oh yes, the Nikon v Canon crowd on there was a 'mare as well, and there was me with my lowly bridge Lumix...did not fit in. At. All :(

As a theme in and of itself for a round, it could be restrictive - given the 'minimal' guideline as regards processing. Although editing software may be easy to get hold of (even free) - not everyone is comfortable using such either and the idea for each round is that it allows as many to join in as want to.

However, I think to enable you and others to express themselves fully - you should create a thread in the Pictures forum about post processing, posting examples, helping others out etc. There are a couple of threads a couple of pages down (one about HDR - but the guy is no longer here now) and another about editing software - so you could latch onto the editing software thread (started by another purple one) here or create your own. :)
