I call heavier ones coats and lighter ones jackets. So to me jackets are worn in the warmer months and coats in the colder.
I of course know it's not exactly correct, but it works for me.

covering your ass should be a crimeI wear a "jacket" when it comes down to below my ass and the sleeves hang off of my arms by a foot. I wear a "coat" when I wear something and it drags behind me like a wedding trane. :willy_nilly:
