but the attempt might be punishable

funny if attempting suicide and failing was punishable by death
Yeh. And then they'd put 'em on suicide watch so that they can't spoil the fun!

"You've been accused of aggravated attempted suicide with intent to kill. How do you plead?"
"Not guilty by reason of insanity, Y'honor. What sane person would try to kill himself?"

I have so much to say about this whole thing, but the most important points are these:

1) Thank God for good Samaritans who aren't afraid to help someone who asks them. Fuck his arrest history (uhh, last one was 10 years ago, folks) and fuck all you people making fun of him b/c he's a colorful character. He's just a regular blue-collar worker who took the time to help someone in need. He even told them to give the reward money to the victims.

2) The dispatcher who took Amanda Berry's call needs some remedial training. That was a make or break moment in a dispatcher's career and she (or he...I still can't tell) completely botched it by disconnecting the phone and failing to show any compassion. Maybe it was a total deer in the headlights moment, but that's no excuse. I have made my shift listen to that call and reminded them of how easily a call we take (whether we fuck it up or not) can wind up on the national news.

3) I cannot imagine the feeling of being reunited w/ your missing loved one after 10 years. Surely at some point it has crossed your mind that they are more than likely dead. I don't know the statistics, but we all know the vast majority of these cases end differently than this one did. Having said that...I hope these families realize that they are not getting back the same person they lost. These women have been brutalized and tortured for years now...they are not the same.

The guy seems a little overwhelmed by people calling him a hero and wanting interviews. Hope it makes life a little easier for him as he did the right thing and those girls were rescued because of his compassion. All this happening so fast has to have him a little flustered.
