Just wondering...what do you people think of circumcising babies? Do you think that should be the child's decision to make on his own when he gets older? Or do you think the parent has the right to make it?

well it can help prevent infection...when boys are young they can't fully retract the foreskin to clean it or so I've heard. But it's mostly just religious tradition that has made it popular, aside from the sexual stigma of being uncircumcised...many people view those who aren't "unclean".

Well....First of all it is a hygeine issue.

Second of all, adult cirumcisions are dangerous to perform.

I don't remember mine, so I cannot honestly say that it had any impact on my psyche.

What he said.

Plus, you have to look at is as if it's ever going to happen, it's going to be as a baby. As a man, I don't think I would ever schedule myself to go in and get chopped.

I think it is unquestionably the parents choice. When my wife was preggers, we started getting exposed to these "let them choose" people.

IMHO, they're kooks. :D

I think it should be the parents decisions. Ive heard that its more dangerous to do once your older.
There are pros and cons to both situations though.

Uncircumcised males are at risk of cancer of the penis,it is found almost exclusively in uncircumcised males. Also among males with a history of multiple sex partners, circumcision reduces the risk of cervical cancer in current sex partners. There is also the issue of infection. Sexually transmitted diseases, including AIDS, is more common in the uncircumcised. Uncircumcised males were more likely to have a urinary tract infection than circumcised ones.

I'm so happy that I got the snip. And I'm even happier that it was right after my birth. It's not an experience I would like to remember.

yeha...i have been lurking around on pregnancy message boards and parenting boards and have experienced quite a few of these people. I just never really thought about it from their perspective before....I didn't really think it was a bad thing to do to your kid, but these ladies made me start to wonder, the way they talk about it...lol

I don't remember what the percentages were, but it was something like 90% of American children get clipped.

The strange part for me was that it seemed the hospital (at least ours) was terrified to sound like they were in any way, shape, or form pushing something on you that could be possibly misconstrued as a religious thing. LOL!! They got chewed out by an angry atheist once or twice I think. :D

Mrs. B pointed out some pretty convincing medical reasons, but there are also cultural reasons behind it. Kid'll end up showing it to somebody someday. :eek

Tim,
Does it bleed afterwards? Well I guess it probably does, but when he peed and the wet diaper got on it, doesn't that hurt? How long does it take to heal? Does it get a scab?

Heck yeah we had our son done. I believe that is is all about Cleanlyness. Plus I knew a guy who was 20 something and he was banging away at his girl and he ripped his foreskin. Shit who wants that.

It looks pretty painful, but it's so red because of the newly exposed skin, not bleeding.

There is very very mild bleeding. You have to keep vasoline on it for about two weeks, but then it looks totally normal.

Our son never acted like it hurt him at all.

On my son, he was healed in less than a week after coming home from the hospital. It did seem to bother him at all.

There was zero blood in his diaper. There was a very thin gauze tube like bandage over the area of incision. That dressing was removed later that day. It was red for less than a week and there was no sign of the treatment 10 days later. The only care we had to do is apply a glob of petroleum jelly on it each time we changed his diaper to prevent it from sticking to the diaper. He didn't show any signs that it was uncomfortable when he was changed... As far as I saw, it wasn't bad for him or uncomfortable.

although it was pretty disgusting looking.

I think it is cleaner .. and personally .. I just like the way a circumsized penis looks compared to an uncircumsized one.

I dated a guy with an uncircumsized one once .. it always had this "slick-ish" feeling that I didn't really care for. I was constantly making him wash because the sllickness made me think it was dirty or something lol.

I'm sure he grew tired of it .. but I just couldn't help it lol.

male circumcision is very rare in infant males in the Uk,this procedure is only deemed necessary if due to medical treatment needs.

a boy would be under pressure from peers at school for being very different here.men born after the early sixties are amost all uncircumcised.

my view is if its not broken then dont fix it.

do not get me onto female circumcision ,it gets me very angry,as i view it as mutilation and a human rights issue
