Caught an employee looking at porn today

I finally got some logging software to see what was going on with my ever so slow internet connection at work. Turns out I have a guy that basically looks at porn all day long... to the tune of nearly 1GB worth in about 4 hours. Now I have to figure out what to about it.

*evil laugh*

LOL wtf? I can imagine a sly peek when you're feeling horny but spending most of your day on it?!

Do you need to speak to him individually? Or could you call a team meeting and say 'I've discovered why the internet is so slow here. Someone, maybe more than one of you, is watching a LOT of inappropriate material on work time. I haven't pin pointed who it is yet but the software is in place to do so if this doesn't stop immediately'.

I'm probably going to go the second route... though I've already blocked his laptop on the firewall, so perhaps he'll get the picture. I'm also working on drafting an internet usage policy since we don't have one.

Ummmm...... Give the poor guy the benefit of the doubt. Maybe it takes him a long long long long long...... long long long.... time to get his fix..... so to speak. Or..... Perhaps he forgot he had it on screen and minimized it and was actually working on.... work. *shrugs*

..... but yeah.... I'd have a meeting with everyone and talk about the new software and when it starts. Then if someone is stupid enough to not be working.... so be it.

Nope... his bandwidth usage kept going up for from 1-4pm this afternoon. I started logging at noon, and he came back from lunch at 1.

Tsk Tsk.... Well..... Once you announce your new software it should cease. If not.... then you have no choice but to let him go.

After talking to a few different people about it... I've pretty much decided that I'm going to give it another 1-2 days to see if he keeps it up even after I've blocked his laptop from internet access. If he keeps it up, I'll take it to our HR person with whom I'm working on an Internet Use policy with. Yup, we have no internet use policy at my company, yet another thing that my illustrious predecessors never did. I thought we had one until I was informed otherwise yesterday.

If he stops, then I'll plan on sending an internet use e-mail out and explain that I'm monitoring our internet usage to track down why our connection has been incredibly slow.

I'm pretty sure it's been going on for a really long time with this guy, seeing as how we've had these internet speed issues for a long time. I attributed them to normal business traffic, as we have a lot of files that customers send to us and that we send to them. At the very least, he's got a very serious problem that he needs to get taken care of. I don't like being the bad guy, but he's affecting business communications, and I simply can't have that. I've gotten 3 other people fired at my previous job for looking at porn at work, but this is a bit harder because I didn't actually work in the same office as any of them. I see this guy every day, have met his wife and kids, and would hate to see him get fired... but maybe that's the wake up call that he needs. He's already been under scrutiny for not getting his work done in a timely fashion, and it looks like I know why now.

Oh My!!.. :eek
Do you need to have internet?.. Can you block porn sites?..

If I had an employee spending all those hours on the internet and especially on porn sites, while getting paid for work he is not doing, I think I would blow his computer to pieces! :ninja

It goes with the nature of my job... like I said, not the first time. It is a bit different though... especially seeing as how I walked past his office and see him looking at his laptop screen, and knowing exactly what he's looking at. Well, not exactly... but you get the picture. More that a little disturbing.
