Cities promote public transport and smaller living spaces but also consume massive resources. Are modern cities environmentally efficient or resource heavy? Should sustainability focus on improving cities or encouraging decentralization?

Dense cities can be more sustainable than sprawl if they invest in public transport, green buildings, clean energy, and local services. Without planning, urban growth increases pollution and inequality. Sustainability in cities is possible, but it doesn’t happen by accident.

It can be sustainable but you need a lot of effort. For instance, you can grow your own veggies but it is costly to grow compared to buying
