Sanctity is the purview of the Church, not the government. We're not an agrarian society anymore, and nobody holds civil marriage in high esteem. Divorce is almost as easy as marriage, and you can get married without even leaving your car in Las Vegas. This whole problem would go away if the government would simply stop acknowledging marriage in any form.

Government still must offer civil marriage as an option.

Not saying I really disagree with you, but isn't marriage defined in the dictionary as a union between a man and a woman, it makes sense to me that two guys/two girls couldn't get married, like they would have to call it something else for them. Just Saying.

I doubt it does define it that way except in the oldest of dictionaries lol
At any rate, marriage isn't an ecclesiastical term solely. It's probably from an old French word, so it's already been adapted around the world in different meanings: you can create a marriage of ideas etc....

Just like the definition of gay has changed in the dictionary so will other words..

50 to 100 years ago if you looked up gay it said

Gay = Happy or Merry

definition in dictionaries are made by man and change yearly. No one says it is right or wrong and no really cares about the definition.. What they really want want is equal rights that go along with that definition and that it really comes down to.

If everyone got civil unions and the same rights and benefits, there would be no issue.. It's when you start to give special considerations to some for special terms..

Just discussing the points and why..

In Canada this was the hot topic about 10 years ago and the church was up in arms about how marriage would be extinct if gays got the right to be wed.. Which they did..

Heck I remember being in church and the priest banging in the pulpit telling people to vote for a candidate or else we would ( not in these exact words but you get the point ) go to hell.. So I basically left the church..

Marriage has not stopped and things are as they were 20 years ago.. In fact I would probably say, they have probably gotten better but I don't have stats to prove it, just opinion..

But one thing for sure, marriage is far from dead as the church said it would be..

A dictionary is not a rule book, it's more of a report. When we change the meaning of a word, the dictionary records the new meaning without questions or complaint. Words mean what we want them to mean.
