You know, the reality is they aren't denied any rights. They have the right to get married with the opposite sex and have access to the same tax breaks and so on.

Laughable...they are denied the right to get married to eachother if they are in love and desire to do so....
Homosexuality is not a choice it is something that you are born as and made as!

Now this sir I totally disagree with. It is totally a choice, but it is not something I will discuss further than that.

My entire issue with this is one of original basis.

Why is this an issue? Because the Bible says, as my Southern counterparts are so fond of saying, "God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve." It is based on religious views of society.

But: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion"

So... the law is in place BECAUSE of religion... but we have a founding principle with would seem to counter this exact type of thing.

Before the NeoCon's among us start screaming "One Nation Under God", let me ask a question... how can "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion" and "One Nation Under God" exist at the same time?

The argument will be presented that the US does not "establish a religion"- that you can be any religion you like. You won't get burned at the stake for being a witch or stoned for being a Muslim. Maybe... but tell me why my dollar bill doesn't say "All Praise Be To Allah" or "In Buddah We Trust"...

I don't care if Adam and Steve get married... why should they miss out on all the fun of divorce? The thing that bothers me is... WHY they can't.

Dude... wow!!! Are you gonna tell that to my 15 yearold brother???
I take it you have a very closed mind or maybe it could be that you have never really met and befriended a person unlike yourself.... or is it that you may be afraid because you have questioned your own sexuality and it has frightened to think you that you may have had homosexual thoughts yourself.
Something to think about.

you're right- being denied to have a relationship with the one you love recognized by the law is so not important

all that matters is that it is a man and woman - which is why we should make marriages pre arranged - i mean what would it matter ?

:sarcasm

Common Law Marriage was disolved in Georgia (where we live) January 1, 1997.... wonder why???

i am actually for common law marriage - especially if there are kids involved.

so what i am hearing you say is that you are against the right for the children to inherit from their fathers.... A lot of people do not have a clue to the legalities involved, well, lack thereof, when it comes to common law marriage... Fathers therefore have no other right to their children other than to pay chold support... and just because a person pays child support DOES NOT mean they have visitation to their children, even if they signed the birth certificate!!!

Acknowledgement of paternity must be made, DNA tests be done, AND Court Ordered Legitimation must be done prior to any inheritance or visitation scheduling........

I was in a common law situation, its not that good for the kids

But, I am glad to see that you do support gay marriage :D

If you are a straight man could you change your mind and say that women aren't for you? could you imagine bringing yourself to love and make love to a gay man?
If the answer to thesequestions are no than you are straight born and made! Gay and Lesbian people feel the same way! They could no more choose to be with the opposite sex then you could choose to be with the same!

What is the big deal about calling it Marriage with the homosexuals??

Why can there not be something that is a compromise that accepts what has been that marriage is between man and woman. While acknowledging a union between those of the same sex. ??????????

I'm sure that will be the first step.
It'll legally be called "legal union" or some other double-speak term while everybody reads it as "gay marriage".
Problem is that labels matter. The rallying cry will be "Stop Legal Unions" instead of "Stop Gay Marriage".
Until the "Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve" argument is done away with we'll go through this every 4 years.

what?!? i am so confused

no no no i dont know what i means to you in your state but here in louisiana it is just basically that if you are shacked up with some one for seven years you have all the rights that a legalized marriage would have

half property rights, life insurance, power of attorney, etc....
all the things gay people should have too

So I'm probably a homophobe (sp?) then right? In which case you would tell me that I'm more likely to turn gay and have homosexual thoughts or something of the like. Perhaps I am a raging closet homo :sarcasm

I didn't really want to get into this part of the conversation so I'm just going to leave at this. It's like a puzzle! People aren't meant to be gay. Two men or two women can not reproduce.

Anyway, I see this conversation getting nowhere and I would rather just end it here before it takes a turn for the worse. I look forward to other debate topics.

Property rights and things of this matter you are very correct about.. what I am refering to is the rights of the children and their biological fathers... even though the fathers may have signed birth certificates, they still have no legal rights to their children except to pay child support if the common law married couple "divorces." This is true in all states.
