Applebee’s fires Redditor waitress for exposing ‘give God 10%’ no-tip receipt

A waitress says she was fired from her job at Applebee’s after posting a note from a pastor who refused to tip, writing that “I give God 10% Why do you get 18.” The waitress, who identified herself only as Chelsea, told The Consumerist that she originally posted the photo on the atheist section of social media website Reddit as a “lighthearted joke.”

“I thought the note was insulting, but it was also comical,” she explained. “I posted it to Reddit because I thought other users would find it entertaining.”

On the receipt she posted, Applebee’s computer system had added an automatic 18 percent gratuity because the dinner party had eight or more people. But the customer scratched out the $6.29 tip and wrote “0.” The receipt included a note about giving God 10 percent and a signature which indicated that the diner was a “pastor.”

“My mistake sir, I’m sure Jesus will pay for my rent and groceries,” Chelsea wrote on Reddit on Wednesday along with a photo of the receipt.

The waitress said that the she failed to redact the signature because she thought it was illegible, but Internet sleuths began using it to obtain the pastor’s identity.

“I had already started receiving messages containing Facebook profile links and blogs and websites, asking me to confirm the identity of the customer,” she recalled. “I refused to confirm any of them, and all of them were incorrect. I worked with the website moderators to remove any personal information. I wanted to protect the identity of both my fellow server and the customer. I had no intention of starting a witch hunt or hurting anyone — I just wanted to share a picture I found interesting.”

On Wednesday, the pastor reportedly contacted the Applebee’s location where she worked and demanded that everyone involved — including the managers — be fired.

“When I posted this, I didn’t represent Applebee’s in a bad light,” Chelsea explained. “In fact, I didn’t represent them at all. I did my best to protect the identity of all parties involved. I didn’t break any specific guidelines in the company handbook — I checked. But because this person got embarrassed that their selfishness was made public, Applebee’s has made it clear that they would rather lose a dedicated employee than lose an angry customer. That’s a policy I can’t understand.”

She added that she was “utterly baffled” about why someone would connect Christian tithing to tips that wait staff rely on tips to pay their bills.

“I’ve been stiffed on tips before, but this is the first time I’ve seen the Big Man has been used as reasoning,” she said. “If this person wrote the note, obviously they wanted it seen by someone… It’s strange to me that now that the audience is wider than just the server, the person is now ashamed.

The last bit of text in the article is probably the best view on this issue in my opinion!

I never really worked for tips but i have had friends and family that do... even then bitching and moaning about a $6 tip? and the balls to use the bullshit about his/her dumb ass giving church money has no point when it comes to tipping for service.

The pastor got put on display for being a dick, then got butthurt over it and got someone fired!

that is the kind of bullshight that gives Christianity a bad name
its one thing to be atheist but she pushed it to make it well known that she didn't agree with him not paying a tip.

Female pastor from what I understand. She made an ass of herself. When it was put on display for the world to see she got embarrassed. I believe Applebees hands are tied to fire the employee but the bad press will linger with the "pastor".

fuck that, the article noted that applebees clearly states parties larger than X number of people will automatically get charged 18% gratuity - the pastor was being a dick and used his "devotion to a higher being" as a way to bitch out of tipping the server.

Sure thing, servers get shafted everyday but the way this pastor did it was shitty... if she got any shit from it, then it was well deserved in my book

I have had more bad than good experiences while dining at Applebees. That said I usually tip 20-25% if the service is good and the food is edible. What a cheap SOB.

A couple things....Pastor was a her, not important but thought I'd just set the record straight AND the waitress who put this on facebook.....wasn't even the waitress who waited on the Pastor............so to me the waitress especially didn't have any business posting it since she wasn't even screwed out of a lower tip...........she should have at least asked the waiter involved if they wanted to have this posted.........

well that seals the deal on me never going to Applebees

What a cheap scumbag that Pastor is. Good thing I don't live nearby or I would seriously consider making a scene at the church the next sunday. When it came time to give the church the 10% I would stand up and say fuck you ya cheap son of a bitch. You can pay my 10% out of your own damn pocket. Then I would ask for an immediate vote from everybody there on whether they should fire that scumbag pastor.

The waitress is wrong for posting the receipt w/o redacting the signature first, for sure...and I actually agree that posting it should be cause for firing b/c it's a privacy issue. HAVING SAID THAT...if I was that waitress I think it would be worth losing my job to expose the pastor for the POS she is. If you don't agree w/ the guidelines for tipping your servers, then don't eat out at restaurants. Unless I get absolutely SHITTY service, I tip 20 - 25%. If I go out on a holiday I tip heavily b/c the server is at work instead of home w/ their family. For instance, we ate at Golden Corral a few Thanksgivings ago, where the waitress literally only brings you refills on your drinks...I tipped her $10 b/c it was Thanksgiving. If I can't afford to tip, I eat at home.

In some states the pastor could actually be charged with a crime for NOT paying the autogratuity. If the menu clearly states the restaurant policy (which I guarantee it does in a corporate chain like Applebee's) then the autograt is NOT optional and is considered part of the bill. Leaving the premises without paying it is theft. This has actually resulted in the arrest of people in a few cases and they were upheld in court.

Probably not likely in this case, but that would SURE be a fitting end to the story.

Actually agree with you. I've watched many a culinary program and know that if that was to be done any many countries it would be frowned upon because gratuity is included in the tab.

I find it a little bit ironic that the pastor gets paid by the church, and gives 10% back.

Also, she took 8 people out to dinner for a total of less than $35.......and made herself look even more of a cheapskate over $6.29

talk about crocodile tears

now the shithead pastor is embarrassed at her lack of judgement

yeah right

then why did the shithead not only stiff the waiter but make a point of leaving a message on the tip

the only thing she is sad about is being outed as a cheapskate and exposing her lack of being true to her faith.

and yeah that is some fancy meal at less than $5 dollars a person

I thought too it might be a violation of the law to not pay the tip. I hope somebody sues this bitches ass and really makes a scene of this.

i am shocked by this. God wouldnt want this type of behavior... especially not by one of his people. That makes me sick. 6 dollars.. wow really.. To me, that is a shitty tip anyways.. so if the service was shitty, whats the big deal with 6 dollars?

We only have one Applebee’s here and I avoid it as much as I can. The service is horrible and personally the menu leaves a lot to improve upon..

On the topic of tips, they do not factor it in here.. I have never seen, no matter how many of us have been in a group, a tip included on the bill..

If they did, they would get the exact 18% only because people would be irritated to have to follow such guideline..

What they used to call it here was a service charge of $2.00 a person and many restaurants sat empty, so they got rid of the charge..

Now as far as the tip goes, I usually find that the larger the group the more the tip tends to be.. So if they automatically put 18% they are cheating their waitresses / waiters out of extra tip money that could go as high as 25% to 30%..

As for the pastor, stupid.. stupid.. stupid to even give the waitress a reason to spotlight her.. She just told the congregation how much she gives God while asking others to give 110% of themselves. Not a great role model and one that should, by Darwin's Law :D, be removed from her position herself..
