I'm lost what did Georgia do?

In order for Georgia to join Nato, President Saakashvili wanted to settle Georgia's instability by reclaiming Ossetia and Abkhazia. By seizing Tskhinvali, he took one hell of a gamble that Russia wouldn't intervene. Georgia is paying a high price for this. It was Georgia that drew first blood with the bombing of Tskhinvali.

I found this un-substantiated blurb online:
Georgia is a freedom loving country that wants to be with NATO. One of their little provinces wants to be independent and got the Russians to help them. Russia wants to invade georgia so it can retake land it lost when the soviet union collapsed.

The Russians, on the other hand, appear to be supporting the breakaway province through the use of tanks and aircraft...but they claim its all in the name of 'peacekeepers.' Many Russians live in the breakaway province and Putin (Prime Minister) is declaring support to the Russian citizens living there. Georgia is trying to restore power in its land and russia is being an aggressive bum.

the Problem is that Russia has violated Georgia's sovereign territory and is weighing in on the internal conflict. but they're doing nothing more than the US and their coalition forces are doing in Iraq, ie, violating (right or wrong) another country's sovereign space.

NATO, the European Union, the US and the so-called OSCE is calling for a cessation of violence and return to negotiations. Russia is also pissed that Georgia is requesting admission into NATO, something seen in their eyes as going over to the 'dark side of the force' so to speak.

Comments? I don't know.

i'd say lets wipe out everyone from Europe to China and take all the oil...

Gas prices will decrease dramastically....:D

We seemed to be heading that way...We just seem to miss the whole "take the oil" part:unsure:

It would seem that showers that electrocute American soldiers is vastly more profitable.

Stop watching Fox news and pick up a damn paper. :p

The major news outlets seem to be leaving this part out, but it was Georgia that struck first... But Russia was waiting and ready. Now they are going over the top to make a prime example to other European countries in the area.

The sad part is, Bush blew his credibility and he doesn't have a leg to stand on. He's railing on Russia that regime change is not acceptable in the 21st century... well unless it's us doing it. And if Russia continues to push further into Georgia, we have nothing backing up our words. George can say he won't stand for it and Russia will just say "What are you going to do about it?" It's not like our military is in an shape to take on Russia. That's what the war in Iraq has done to America... it has blown our credibility and it's broken the military.
The media in the US, not just Fox, seems to leave out that Georgia started this mess. Yes the Russians are going overboard but they were not the instigators. And of course the US is airlifting Georgian troops from Iraq back to Georgia to fight the Russians.

Interesting read in Newsweek: This Isn't the Return of History. by Fareed Zakaria. The article calls Russia's aggression against Georgia a huge blunder. All it's neighbors are scrambling to get into NATO. And a brief critique of McCain foreign policy approach. :)

Imagine if we had kicked Russia out of the G8 and broken most ties with Moscow—as the Republican nominee, John McCain, and many neoconservatives have long wanted to do. Then, when the Russians attacked Georgia, we would have had only two options—appeasement or war.
