A man–we’ll call him Lance–has worked long and hard at his job and feels he deserves a slight vacation. Lance’s cat, Snickerdoodle, is his constant companion and his best friend, but Lance can’t take Snickers on to the vacation with him. He calls and calls and calls around for a place to keep Snickers, but either the vets are packed up or his friends just can’t take the extra burden. His brother, Jake, offers to take Snickers off of his hands.
Now Jake’s been known to be more than a bit irresponsible in the past, so Lance hesitates. Jake presses him, and Lance relents, giving him strict instruction. He then takes his bags and goes on his vacation.
Once he gets to his allotted place, he calls Jake to check up on Snickers. "I’m sorry, man," Jake apologizes. "But Snickers is dead. I’m sorry, I’m so sorry!"
Lance paused for a minute, chewing this over. "That’s horrible! I mean, I left him for you for only a day now! And what’s worse is that this is the beginning of my vacation. Couldn’t you have stretched it out a little bit?"
"Like how?"
"Like... you could say Snickers is on the roof and won’t come down. Then I could call again and you could say, ‘oh, he fell down and he’s badly hurt. We’ve taken him to the ER but there’s no word yet. We’re prayin’!’ Then I could call at the very end of the vacation and you could say, ‘I’m sorry, man, but Snickers didn’t make it.’ You have entirely ruined my vacation, do you know that?"
Jake continues to apologize, and gradually Lance calms down. "So how’s Mom?" he asked.
"She’s on the roof," his brother said sincerely.
